Hello Everyone,
So I've been offered a teaching position in Riyadh with a company called Ertyad. Has anyone heard of them and if so any insight on teaching there or just general advice would be highly appreciated.
Thank you in advance! |

Be prepared for the following in class:
Insanely bone idle students who will be disrespectful, rude, arrogant and generally a complete pain in the butt to teach
Constant use of phones in class, regardless of what you tell them
Students using 'wasta' to get their own way
Incompetent, backwards management who think they know everything
Incredible idiocy amongst colleagues, Westerners and all
Bureaucracy and lots of it
At least that was my experience...living is a whole different kettle of fish! |

I'll be teaching 4 to 14 year olds. Surely it wouldn't be that bad? |

Your question is too broad; it would help if you provided more info about the job. For example, what's the name of the school? Also, what does the job offer entail in terms of pay and benefits (if you want to disclose this info)? |

My apologies, the school name is Ertyad. As for the package, they have offered accommodation, tax free salary of 13,000 SAR monthly, travel and a one off exit and entry visa (if I choose to go on holiday in neighbouring countries). |

I'm guessing that's Ertyad-Scholastic. I doubt you'll get much of a response on this forum since most of the expat TEFL positions in KSA are post-secondary. So definitely post your questions on a couple of the popular, general expat Saudi forums; they reach a broader audience.
That said, make sure the company will be bringing you over on an employment/work visa, which leads to an iqama. Also confirm they'll reimburse you for the visa and associated costs. |

I teach 18-45 year olds, and most of THEM act like 4-14 year olds. Not even joking, they moan, b*tch and gripe when you take their phone off them, and if they are caught doing something wrong, they're immediately apologetic (and obviously fake about it)I would only dread to think what Saudi kids must be like :/
By the way - get a multi-entry visa as an extension to your single entry visa - it'll be worth it! |

Yes it is Ertyad Scholastic. And they will be reimbursing all the costs from my side.
Thank you for the recommendations, will be searching on other forums. |

Gamjorba - how would I go about applying for multi visa? Whilst still in London or after arriving in Riyadh? |

I'm not Gamjorba (not even close), but:
As far as I know, you do not have an option. Your employer provides you with either a SINGLE exit-reentry visa (about 200 Rips) or a multiple exit-rentry visa (about 500 rips). In some casis the employer will offer both. It depends on the employer's policy. You can apply for an exit visa after you get your Iqama (permanent resident document). You are not issued one of these exit visas overseas...you have to be in-Kingdom to get it.
If you do get one of these visas in the distant future, be sure you understand the TIME LIMITATIONS under which they work. (It's too complicated to go into here). You always hear of people whose entry visa has expired while overseas causing themselves all kinds of grief and fines before they can re-enter KSA.
(By the way, there are other types of visas for VIPs (An ESL teacher is never a VIP). They can get visas valid for a year and in some cases valid indefinitely.) |

To be honest I just wanted the freedom to travel whilst in Saudi, otherwise I'm not as concerned about the multi entry visa. If they provide me with it I will be happy but if not I'll just live with it
Anyway thank you for all the help and info, appreciate it! |

I'm not really sure how it works, but my employer got me a single entry visa, then when I wanted to go on vacation for Hajj, they gave me a single entry/re-entry visa for that trip at a cost of 200SAR. When I realised I would leave the country a fair few times, I asked them for a multi entry, and they did that for 500SAR for me. So it's something the employer could sort out. Given I've left the country about 15 times in total in a year, the multi entry worked out great for me.
They give you a piece of paper confirming this exit/re-entry visa, but after the 2nd trip, I never bothered with it again, and just presented my passport/iqama each time. Simples! |

OMG Gamajorba....15 exits in 1 year? That must be a record. You must really love your location. You probably haven't saved a dime.
Be a little careful with that "piece of paper" tho. It DOES have an expiry date. If it expires while you're out of Kingdom, you'll have a hell of a time trying to get back in. |

It's usually 2 weeks or so, and I never left for longer than 2 weeks apart from Hajj. Most of my trips were (long) weekend trips. In fact, 1 trip involved entering and exiting Kuwait, Bahrain AND Qatar in 3 days...don't ask.
I've saved a fair bit considering, but yeah I've spent quite a good deal on travel.
Bahrain 3 times
Qatar + Kuwait + Bahrain (all by land)
Hong Kong + China
Israel
India
Egypt
Lebanon
UK (family emergency actually) + UAE
Kazakhstan + Kyrgyzstan + UAE twice
Bahrain x 2 + Russia |

Wait until you're in country to ask your employer. A multi exit/reentry visa is favored by those who feel the need to "escape" from KSA for neighboring countries every chance they get. I personally never traveled out of the country for short weekend trips when I taught in the Kingdom; I did just fine obtaining a single exit/reentry visa for long breaks. Anyway, you'll figure out what best suits your lifestyle once you get to KSA. |
