Football (soccer) fans all over the globe will be delighted by the news of today´s arrests in Switzerland. The FBI has taken the bull by the horns. Good old USA! FIFA has stunk for a long time. Where will the 2018 and 2022 World Cups be staged when it is demonstrated that Russia and Qatar bribed Herr Blatter?

Good on America for doing this, hope a load of people get extradited and sent down, hopefully those at the top.
Everybody knows what a corrupt organisation FIFA is. Looks like they've been too confident, thinking they can launder their money in the US banking system and not get caught.

Just follow the money...

Hopefully we'll see some positive changes in football and it can now start moving forward.

FIFA has said that (despite all the bribery) they will not change the already chosen (i.e. purchased) locations of future World Cups.

After all, then, the "chosen ones" would probably want their money back. Very Happy

John

The worst thing is that Blatter will probably be re-elected on Friday.

Naturally - to do otherwise would amount to a tacit admission of guilt.

Tricky Dicky was a saint compared to slippery Sepp.

The investigations into allegations of corruption within Fifa have hardly come as a surprise. Even if one accepts that Sepp Blatter knew nothing at the time of any misdemeanours within the Fifa family, the honourable action would be for him to leave while he still has a vestige of credibility.

The problems with Fifa run far deeper than its leader, however. Its systems and processes lack transparency, facilitate undemocratic decisions and are no longer remotely fit for purpose.

Sepp was actually very clever in his operations. A stadium for Utter Slobodistan and a football scholarship for XYZ. Spread the wealth around ! Reminds me of Huey Long !

Someone put it succinctly the other day:

If he he really knew nothing about it = Incompetent
If he did = Complicit.

The most telling indication that the two investigations into the operations of Fifa - one by the US authorities into corruption allegations and the other by the Swiss into the award of World Cup tournaments - are starting to bite is the reaction of the corporate sponsors. Visa, one of the biggest, declared its 'disappointment and concern with Fifa' about the allegations and added ' we have informed them that we will reassess our sponsorship'. Coca Cola for its part says ' we have repeatedly expressed our concerns about these serious allegations'. McDonald's is monitoring the situation. So is the parent company of Budweiser, sponsor of the 2018 World Cup, and tellingly, Hyundai, the sole Asian Fifa partner for that tournament, is expressing concerns of its own.

This is the kind of talk that Fifa may actually pay attention to, even if it ignores the protests of Uefa, the European football association. Sponsorship is a critical part of its business, and part of the US indictment against Fifa officials relates to claims about the alleged payment of 40 million US dollars by a sponsor of the Brazilian team in 1996 to an affiliate of its marketing agent.

For companies, sponsorship of the sport is undeniably lucrative, but the gains seem more problematic if they bring reputational damage by association with ' a body accused of gross corruption and malpractice. Indeed one way that fans can bring their own pressure to bear on Fifa is by making their displeasure clear to the sponsors.

Sepp Blatter will be quizzed by Swiss prosecutors as part of a criminal investigation into the controversial votes for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

Now Prince William, as impartial president of the UK FA has called on sponsors ' to help reform the beautiful game'.

FIFA will always be corrupt as long as these money grabbing scum are in charge. The whole structure of FIFA needs to change.
