I get the impression that people see direct recruitment via on organisation to be more effective and beneficial for the teacher, rather than via a job agency website etc.

This may be true, but when I go a college's website, I seldom see vacancies, so how does one find the 'direct recruiting' institutions ? Do people just mean send a speculative letter to them and hope for the best ?
