Hi all,

I am a qualified teacher from a Canadian university (ESL). I might be interested in teaching in the Middle East as it would be a good experience and to clear some student loans.

Where do I start to find a job? What is a good tool to look for jobs?

I am interested in teaching high school.

Thanks a lot

What is your BA/MA degree major in and how much TESOL experience do you have? Also, what exactly do you mean by "qualified" teacher?

If you hold a teaching license/qualification in ESOL from your province (for teaching in public schools), a couple of years' experience teaching ESL in a public school setting, and a relevant degree (e.g., English, bilingual education, TESOL, etc.), then take a look at Teach Away's site for ESL positions in the UAE's school system.

I'm in a similar situation, a graduate on BA hons Finance, Ive also done my CELTA qualification and have 3 years teaching qualification in the ESOL sector (British citizen, if this helps). I'm looking for a gig in the middle east, just wondering how different are the recruitment process from say UAE and KSA.

In terms of qualifications and experience required say for a job in a University or an ESL institution.

Also the benefits package, are they similar in wages and other perks such as accomodation etc?

Try Saudi Arabia; you'd need a TEFL-related MA to compete for positions in the UAE. See the Cafe's job board for Saudi openings.

thanks NS

KSA seems like a good proposition, I'll have a read through some of the articles there. Seems like your quiet the guru for knowledge on KSA. Are you currently residing there?

Thanks, but I'm no guru when it comes to KSA; I'm just one of the few women who regularly posts about the Kingdom. (I left KSA about 2 years ago.)

My experience in KSA was positive; I'm still in touch with quite a few colleagues and former students. I left because I wanted to get enrolled in an educational technology degree program, which will be finished by the end of this year. I'd also gotten hired for a special project via the US State Dept in another country in the Mid East.

Anyway, you definitely should scroll through the Saudi forum threads to get an idea of what to pursue/avoid.

We're adults and can make that decision independently. But that's the point of reviewing the forum threads as well as expat Internet sites to become more informed about Saudi Arabia (or any other country for that matter). In fact, if some posters on this forum had taken the time to actually research KSA before considering their company's offer, they would have realized it wouldn't have been a good fit, and subsequently, they likely would have declined. And we wouldn't be subjected to so many negative, petty comments and stereotypes about Saudi students, coworkers, the traffic, the culture, and so on.
