|
|
I currently have a three year Japanese work visa. I lived in Japan for just over a year and moved back to the states just a few months ago. Now I really want to go back and do another year. The thing is, I know that the work visa is voided if you're out of the country for more than a year, which for me would be October of this year. I wouldn't be able to go back until January 2016. Is there a way to keep my work visa from being cancelled in October? |

As far as I know, the answer is no. But remember you can go over and automatically stay as a tourist for up to 3 months, and during that time find work and get a visa that way. |

Did you get a reentry permit? That keeps the visa valid for its full three years. |

Was I supposed to get that before leaving the country? Would it be possible to get it know through a Japanese embassy or consulate? |

Q7. Can I re-enter Japan after temporarily leaving the country?
A. If foreigners who already reside in Japan, having acquired a status of residence for a long-term stay, such as for work, wish to leave the country temporarily during the period for which they have received permission to stay in Japan, they can obtain a re-entry permit before departing Japan. This permit enables them to re-enter Japan without having to obtain a new visa, as long as their re-entry is within the valid period of the permit. For such foreigners, the procedures for entering Japan are much simpler than the usual landing procedures.
Applications for re-entry permits can be made at the nearest immigration authority under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Justice. When re-entry permission is granted, the permit is stamped on the foreigner's passport.
In principle, re-entry permission is valid for only one time. However, foreigners who have to leave Japan frequently can apply for multiple re-entry permits. It is not possible to obtain re-entry permission at an embassy or consulate after departure from Japan. However, if a foreigner who has departed Japan after acquiring re-entry permission is unable to return to Japan before expiration of the permit for unavoidable reasons, such as illness, the foreigner can apply at an embassy or consulate for an extension of the re-entry permit's period of validity. |

I think this information is outdated. I knew about this before I lived in Japan. When I lived there I was informed by my co-workers that the system had changed and that foreign residents no longer had to apply for re-entry permits every time they left the country. I was able to leave and reenter the country a few times without ever having to apply for a reentry permit.
What I want to know is if my three year work visa is still valid until late September, which will be a year after I left. And if there is some way I can keep it from expiring so that I can go back in early 2016 without having to get a new one.
If I do have to get a new one, will I have to return to the US in order to get it, or can I get it through the Embassy or consulate here in Spain? |

Thanks this clears a lot of things up. One more thing. If I do have to get a new work visa, do I have to go back to the United States to get it, or can I get it through the Embassy here in Spain? |
