"a military set-up reminiscent of being in Sing-sing or Alcatraz"
Perhaps Akoo did not understand my allusions to maximum-security prisons in the USA. I may have made unfair assumptions about his abilities in reading comprehension and cultural awareness.
Military set-ups are not nice places to be - either as a trainee or as a teacher. |

I wonder how many of these MA bashers actually have an MA?
It's usually people who have no idea of teaching in a proper setting that make such misinformed comments.
Credible universities rarely take anyone seriously with a BA + CELTA. |

Frankly, if you know you'll have major difficulties reconciling life in KSA, no amount of money will allay those personal feelings. Some foreigners simply can't or won't adjust to the country's ultra-conservative culture and subsequently, end up being miserable and frustrated (and unfortunately, post here with their constant negative comments). Consider it a personality clash. So nix the Kingdom off your list and focus on Oman and the UAE.

What you hope for isn't likely to be what contracting companies feel you're worth. Based on the salary ranges indicated in their various ads for KSA, that $4000 isn't realistic for your qualifications (a CELTA, unrelated degrees, and six years of experience). That high end of the range is reserved for those with an on campus, TEFL-related MA and above. (Direct hire generally pays more.) Keep in mind, the first things employers look for on an applicant's CV is nationality and the qualifying degree's relevance and level. Regardless, KSA isn't a good fit for you. |

Salary comes down to personal perspective, what may seem low to one individual may be more than sufficient for another. If someone deems the salary to be low for them, then simply don't accept the job offer or try to meet more of the criterias set by recruitment.
An MA is as valuable as someone wants it to be. |
Ditto....all comes down to personal perspective |

| I think it's ridiculous to accuse those who accept lesser paid positions to be 'selling out' the profession in any way. If you think that then you must be living in some ivory tower somewhere. Likewise, those who do brag about these amazingly well-paid jobs will never ever tell us who their employer was, so they may as well be telling us that they can also turn base metals into gold or they can fortell next week's lottery results. |

Anyone who takes these university jobs is dumb and only pushing down wages for the rest of us. |

I agree. Plus, it's a contradiction to gleefully claim, "I'm making 24000 a month!" while in the same breath, state that others are "pushing down wages for the rest of us." |

Nice subtle, passive-aggressive dig there. So not everyone can relate to KSA as well...c'est la vie. |

Dear Gamajorba,
"Nice subtle, passive-aggressive dig there."
So subtle I still don't see the "passive-aggressiveness." Could you please explain why you used that description for nomad's post?
Regards,
John |

Do you mean every teacher in your college earns this money? Or you are special? And do you get free housing along with this salary?
This would be then an unusual salary. Perhaps your college is very special. And, since all teachers earn 24000, I assume the turnover of teachers is next to none, as the carrot is substantial, so the females weep and suffer in silence for the noble cause of 24000 a month. Is this right?
And this money is for how many weeks of teaching and how many hours weekly? And how many weeks of paid vacation do you get?

I could be wrong as I'm not familiar with the term, but doesn't "all in" mean that all he gets is the 24K and from that he pays his own rent, tickets, medical, etc...
And again... none of these jobs are available for expat women.

| 'All in' is all our allowances; Flights, accommodation, 8 weeks vacation a year etc. .. companies have to provide insurance separate I believe. There are female campuses. Providers include Nescot, Lincoln, Laureate, Niagara, Oxford partnership... |

If yep is a man, then I cancel my questions. I thought these new colleges of excellence are for females only, therefore I took yep for a female.
But still some of my questions are valid: the hours, weeks and month.
The case may be that if you factor it in, a higher than average salary may turn out to be a very average salary or even unpaid labour.
I had interviews with 3 such colleges of excellence, and when I asked questions about hours, weeks and months, these questions turned out to be first very indecent, and since I insisted on obtaining answers - and I didn't get them in 2 of these interviews although it is an ABC of a contract to know it! - eventually it turned out that the somehow impressive-at-face-value salary turned out to be unpaid labour.
As well as, there is a new concept used by many of these colleges, a phenomenon called a ''rolling contract'', the meaning of which I still haven't been able to figure out, but they, the inventors of this phenomenon, say you are entitled to a month of vacation only after 11 months of work, which further means that you first work for 11 months, i.e. teach about 10 000 hours or so, well at least to my XIXth century mind it is way too improper, and then half dead or dead mostly, you leave for vacation, never to come back to KSA again.

Those are the Colleges of Excellence, which are essentially vocational schools for Saudi males and females.
A salary of 24,000 is misleading. What is your actual monthly wage minus all the allowances? And have you started working there yet given that another company will be managing what used to be Pearson's role? |
