YEP, i applied to that job months ago. Never heard back. I assumed it was because of passport. A lot of jobs are only for UK/US nationals. Especially the higher pay jobs.

Yes, there are cheaper flight options but if you sign a contract in the spring when most of the positions come up and try to get a flight in August to Saudi the prices are generally quite high. Also, you usually buy your ticket after the visa is processed and that can take time.

I have a good friend teaching at the Makkah branch of TQ with a BA... He is making a little less than Yep but is still making a lot more than my friends with MA's working as direct hires at UQU...

He prefers to have the cash and spend it as he sees fit (in terms of accommodation) and travel when/where he wants to... Also, he don't have to pay for his iqama nor medical insurance...

However, is workload is much more than those at UQU... And much more stressful...

He must be very happy to be teaching in Mecca. For that privilege, should he not be paying them ?

Newbies, please note that the Religious Bearded Ones insist on the spelling "Makkah" and reject the traditional Orthography of "Mecca".

It's not just the bearded who prefer the spelling Makkah. Makkah is closer to the Arabic pronunciation. The word "Mecca" in English has come to be used to refer to any place that draws large numbers of people and because of this many Muslims regard the use of this spelling for the city as inappropriate or offensive. Muslims generally do not like to see their holy city compared to other places. Like the Hamburger Mecca of the United States for example.

Sorry OP, but in regards to a contract offer. It all comes down to what you really want. If your after more money than what has been offered, kindly decline and apply elsewhere or gain relavant qualifications asked in the job spec.

If your more fortunate than others, try getting someone to 'refer' you into a high paying salery if they have strong influence within the institute/organisation

As far as I'm concerned, they can spell it any way they want, but to the best of my knowledge, most, if not all, of the rest of the world still spells it "Mecca" in English.

How it is spelled in English or any other language is irrelevant since it is an Arabic word.

The spelling in Arabic has never changed. As with any other Arabic word that gets transliterated into English, the spelling can vary.

I am sure that most Saudis (or any other Arabic speaker) could care less how you spell Mecca in English.

From discussion of wages to spelling, this is fairly amusing. As someone has mentioned, muslims will spell it the way they think is best fit, and non muslims can spell it how they see fit. The English spelling will never be 100% accurate as the Arabic pronunciation.
