The first question new classes (adults) always asked me was "What salary?"

I always answered, A, none of your business, Mohammed. And B, more than you.

Shut them up every time and they spent the rest of the course guessing/asking around what it was.

Yep, same here.

I often gave them a seemingly measly figure just to keep them happy e.g. 9000SAR a month. Which is actually the same (if not a bit less) as most of my students anyway.

The noseyness doesn't stop at salaries. Yet if you ask them the same questions, they shy away like a child...

What's your take on disclosing one's personal salary to others, including coworkers?

Do you feel there's an obligation to share such info on this forum and/or with coworkers because it's helpful? Moreover, do you trust what others say they earn? Or do you suspect some people inflate those numbers?

On the other hand, do you withhold info about your salary from others? You may feel it's no one's business what you or anyone else makes (for whatever reason).

Your comments are welcome.

I don't think anyone should do anything they're not comfortable doing, especially if it is something that is as sensitive as disclosing one's salary. But, we're all here to help each other out, right? if it helps a teacher make a decision about whether or not to take the job, and you feel comfortable disclosing, then pray tell!

Yea, for sure, some teachers inflate their salaries, but, hopefully, they can be called out by another poster. It muddies the water, though, when one discloses a salary without revealing their experience, quals and nationality, cuz, as we all know, this makes a difference. Ditto when one asks about how much they should get without sharing info about their background.

That's not the only issue. Those asking on the forum if X salary offer is good or how much their qualifications can (realistically) get them will end up with a mixed bag of confusing responses---some replies will be on point, while others argue for the "pipe dream" salary.

What might be a mixed bag of confusing responses to some may well be a mine of potentially useful information for others. I can offer my own example - by just reading discussions on the forum, and not having even stepped into the magic Kingdom yet, I reckon I have a good idea of what to realistically expect for someone in my position. I am now in a much better position to secure a reasonable contract agreement than I was before reading these. So share what you can.!!

If you want a high salary in Saudi Arabia, the best jobs I know of, are Saudi Aramco - up to £5000 a month but you need to pay for your accommodation.
Saudi Electric Services Polytechic - £48,000 a year.
BAE Systems - £42,000 plus bonus up to £5000
And I think the American Military Contracters around $70,000.
The average 'decent job' is paying around £34,000.
People who go to Saudi Arabia for $30,000 are a disgrace to the teaching profession, and as has been said here before.
Teachers accepting low wages/bad conditions drives the salary downwards.
I see BAE Systems is now employing contract teachers for $46,000 a year, so even this job is being slowly dismantled.

How do you conclude that teachers who accept low wages are a "disgrace" and "drive the salary downwards?" Frankly, there are so many contracting companies operating in KSA---each with their own salary chart. There's no consistency between companies, but there's certainly competition.

Contracting companies look at each applicant's nationality and qualifications/experience on an individual basis in determining pay. For example, Al-Shazam requires, at minimum, a generic BA, a TEFL cert, and 2 years of experience with adult students. That generally hits the low end of the salary range indicated on their job posting and is what Foghorn Leghorn gets because he meets those base requirements. However, Elmer Fudd applies with his generic BA, a TEFL cert, but 18 months of experience teaching orphans in Zimbabwe. Al-Shazam is short their inventory of teachers and decides to hire Elmer despite his not-quite-there qualifications. They offer him less than Foghorn, which Elmer happily accepts, and the world is a better place for it.

I think it is more ˇdesperation" than being a "disgrace".

Perhaps desperation, maybe lack of experience, could be shortcomings in matching criteria as NS pointed out. Might even just be bad luck. Mssrs Leghon and Fudd certainly had lady luck play a part. Now if old Leghorm had applied to alMashaz instead they might have offered him another 10% on top. But because he hadn't been reading the discussions on a certain forum he wasn't the wiser. So he went for Shazam. Which he'll likely regret soon. But poor Fudd was sure he didn't have a chance as his experience didn't really count he was told. So he jumped at the one offer that came his way. As someone said it's a merry world go round.
