And what about the post above that? Or do you just pick and choose which information is relevant to your argument. |
What argument? Seriously, this isn't about my interests; it's about the OP's. As I've stated, he can freely choose China, South America, Mexico, Mongolia, wherever. However, he should go into this journey with his eyes wide open so that he becomes well informed and can make the right decisions for himself. Nuff said. |

Hey santi84. What you have to remember is that a shady employer in China could rip anyone off, including a guy with a PHD. You can't live your life in fear of what could happen, or you may well go insane.
A person with or without a degree should perform due diligence: search the internet for reviews of the institution, ask former employees, ask current employees etc etc. research, research, research.
You are just as likely to get screwed by an employer in your home country as abroad. When you take into account that every bad experience ends up online, there really aren't that many horror stories. You will find bad experiences in the west, too. |
Sure, of course. Lots of people have been ripped off - but as a legal worker, there are generally avenues of recourse. For example, I currently teach in a K-12 system back in North America. If my employer doesn't pay me, I can complain to labour standards and they can face repercussions.
What can an illegal worker do in China? I don't know, but it sounds like they would probably be screwed. Let's be realistic - dodgy employers are much more likely to rip people off, offer terrible conditions, and screw people.
My uncle is currently teaching in China with a PhD in TESOL. If he was screwed over (unlikely, considering it is a well-established opinion, but things happen), is he in the same boat as an illegal worker? |

I think everyone is in agreement that nobody should be an illegal worker in ANY country.
And that was the point of what I have been saying: this person isn't an illegal worker in SOME provinces in China.
So they would have just as many rights as a guy with a degree. And yes China has courts if you feel like you have been mistreated. And just like western courts, sometimes people win their case, sometimes they lose. |

I base my statements on personal experience and that of others I personally know (and their are many). I don't use rumor or hearsay. |
Suphanburi - For someone with umpteen PHD's (allegedly) and umpteen years of experience (allegedly), it is quite alarming that you don't know the difference between there and their. Clearly your academic qualifications don't count for that much if you are still not aware of grade 1 spelling differences.
Carry on. |
Use of the correct homonyms is the bane of auto correct on portable devices (or should that be vice versa).
As to my academics and experience, my post history here and on other EFL related forums is long enough that I don't need to defend it (about 16 years on Dave's (since 1999) and my presentations and publications likewise.
I somehow missed your presence earlier this year at the SEMEO, ThaiTESOL,and PELLTA conferences (where I was speaking / presenting). Perhaps we can have coffee or lunch at the KOTESOL, KATE or one of the other regional conferences?
As to your ad hominem attack re: my misuse of a homonym as a means to justify your position as somehow being correct ... hmmm. Must be an American thing - attack the poster rather than discuss the post.

Quickly getting back on topic and avoiding bickering for the sake of bickering would be a prudent move at this point.
Temporarily locked so that everyone can digest the the sentence immediately preceding this one. |

Let's try this again absent the endless bickering or off-topic postings.
