No one seems to have answered th OP's original question. Will the Canadian Govt. help him buy a house or will they expect him to get a job, earn some money and sort it out himself like those nasty brutes in the UK?

Once you're in Canada as a permanent resident, you're on your own. You need (I think) $30,000 to be verified in an account in your name before you are allowed in, so that you have money to last a year while you go looking for a job and a place to live (although a lot of people live off less than thirty thousand a year) and (but not in this case) learn English or French (if you're going to Quebec, which is apparently a little easier to get into than the rest of Canada, then you now have to declare that you will learn French. Many people first arrive in Quebec, start learning French, realize that most of the jobs are not in Quebec, leave Quebec and start learning English in Ontario or BC). It's better to already have a job before you go, but getting a job before you go is really hard.

I guess it was obvious to everyone else that they're not going to provide any assistance.

Seemed pretty obvious to me too, but hey, that's why the guy said he wanted to emigrate to Canada - cos' the nasty ol' British Govt. wouldn't help him buy a house.

In "Columbine," Moore did ask one interesting question: how come Canada has many guns but few murders? Moore stared into the abyss of political incorrectness at the obvious answer -- Canada is only 3 percent black and Hispanic -- and blinked. I't is so much safer blaming tacky K-Mart for selling bullets.

Dear Mr DanDan.....
Is your name that after the fashion of DuranDuran....or because you are instantly forgettable and people simply can't remember you unless they repeat your ridiculous moniker twice?

Did I say that I expected the British Govt to give me a wad of cash to buy a house....?
Nope....didn't think so!
Did I hint that I resented having to work for a living in the UK?
Nope.....didn't think so!
Do I expect the Canadian govt to help me with assistance?
Nope don't think so!
Do I expect to sit on my ass all day and not contribute to Canadian society by not working?
Nope don't think so!

The help I was referring to actually a decent economic policy to steady if not decrease the cost of housing for first time buyers wanting to get on the property ladder in the Uk.!!!!

The average cost of 154,000 per property in the UK is way to steep for most of the people I know.
5 or 6 years ago sure the prices were stable and affordable but now it's just a financial noose around my neck I am not willing to bear.....and I'd much rather take my money elsewhere.

By the way Dumdum......I have been working( my nose to the grindstone)for 22 years now and unlike you have worked long and hard in my various chosen professions.!

I don't know what you're doing in Hong Kong.......spreading the gospel of Browns battered economic policy perhaps or maybe just wasting everyone's time out there....but whatever you are doing ....STAY THERE!

Looking at Dandans picure, one thinks of the old Turkish saying -

A woman for duty, a boy for pleasure, but a melon for ecstasy.

Just a thought... why would one show that picture?

Haha. You'd probably still be cursing the rain if you came from Prince Rupert. Vancouver rain is a pain though, I agree.

Migo- I am from Prince Rupert. Are you? (When I finally moved to Vancouver, it was apparently one of the rainiest autumns on record and everyone thought I was nuts because I kept commenting on how good the weather was compared to P.R. Laughing )

People are always talking about Hitler's book-burning.

Today the only people who actually burn books are on the left. For example, if someone here sends a copy of David Duke's Jewish Supremacism to Canada, the government BURNS, yes I said BURNS, the book. Not only that, but the Canadian government sends a bill for the costs of burning the book to the intended Canadian recipient!

But to a liberal or a respectable conservative the burning of a book labeled "racist" is not "book burning," so no one is going to mention this to you.

Err, Jeddah, the government of Canada is not particularly Leftist. It's liberal in name, mostly. As someone who tends to lean to the green-left somewhat, I disagree with what you broadly generalised. I am against book burning or banning of any sort. I think all information should be allowed to be out there and we are intelligent enough to make our own minds up about things.

My ex boyfriend lived in Romania before he came to Canada 2 years ago,...... his English was not very good so I helped him with all his papers and appointments so I saw first hand what It was like.... for him, it was a culture shock.. he kept comparing the people, the women especially, to his country back home... he didnt like it here, (he had come to winnipeg, manitoba, canada) so he kept trying to find BAD things about it, rather than GOOD things, and this always upset me. I would tell him, "life isnt as bad as you think Tiberiu, in fact , it is a lot better here then it was for you in Romania..." he wouldnt listen. He thought Canada was something it wasnt.... just make sure you do your research before you move.. on everything... the weather, the economy, the government.... housing... everything. Then you should be okay, and able to avoid culture shock. Just so you know, it costs more to live on either cost then it does to live in the centre of Canada, being (Saskatchewan, manitoba). warm regards,
yoanna
