So, the final decision needs to be made - private middle school in Xiamen, 35 hours/w (20 contact), teaching in the International Department prepping kids for study abroad, 11k/month after tax.
Or Shanghai at a government middle school, introducing and creating a curriculum for a drama-type programme, about 10-15 teaching hours, plus approximately 20-25 hours creating/fleshing out the curriculum, 20k/month after tax.
Both are Monday-Friday jobs.
In Xiamen I would save about 3-5k/month. But would bolster the salary with privates (potentially another 1500-3000/m)
In Shanghai I think the job will be quite intense, and leave little time for privates.
Lived in Xiamen for 10 years (there's both good and bad to that), never been to Shanghai.
Unfortunately the teacher trainer position in Malaysia didn't come through, so it's the pick of these two, or head off to Vietnam for a gander.
Which one would you pick? |

| Money issues aside, what kind of lifestyle are you going for? Xiamen vs. Shanghai are very different in terms of lifestyle options / activities. |

City life, with a smattering of nature. A decent social life. Not willing to work myself to death for a boss (any boss).
Enough free time to exercise, read, study, be out and about. Like to travel in Asia once/twice a year. Visit home once every year or so. |

It would depend on how I felt about Xiamen. Familiarity vs. the unknown and all that.
I've never been there myself, but I did work in Shanghai and liked it. Lots of options for food & entertainment, good subway system, relatively honest taxi drivers, etc. Much depends on lifestyle as far as "good living" goes. Although housing is expensive, I was able to save a good bit while earning less than you'd be making. But I mostly stayed home when not working and cooked my own food. Someone who loves the nightlife could easily burn up their savings there...but of course that could be true anywhere. |

The important numbers:
Shanghai 60Kuai/Beer (at a decent place)
Xiamen: 20Kuai/Beer (at a decent place) |

| Saving 10+k a month in Shanghai is quite realistic on that salary, even with going/eating out and not doing extra work. I'm all about savings these days, so I'd go with the Shanghai offer. |

Xiamen is quite pricey in the drinks department. 30 kuai/Tsingtao draft at a half-decent place. 50-60 kuai/330ml Corona or Heineken at a slightly upscale place.
My HK friends were surprised at the prices.
Then again a night out/week is good enough for me. Would rather spend time with a bird, or friends. |

In that case I would probably go for Shanghai.
But actually I wouldn't take either of those options. Have you looked at teaching positions in HK? |

Would love to be in HK. Work in progress. |

How are you guys coming across these high-paying jobs in Shanghai?
I can never find them. Only training mills that will occasionally pay up to 16-17k monthly, but I don't want to work in them. |

| How much would you effectively be left with each month in Shanghai if you earned 20K / month? Assuming a reasonable lifestyle, decent apartment, eating out / going out regularly etc etc. |

They are out there. From what I can see, Dave's job advertisements more often than not only have the bottom of the barrel jobs. There are many other websites out there advertising for teaching jobs in China. |

And when all is said and done, most are either of similar quality or dubious reliability ("earn UP TO __"). The juiciest morsels probably aren't advertised at all.
Plus, maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see the options above as a vast improvement over 17k at a language mill. It's a solid salary for full-time hours. Personally I'd rather earn a little less to teach adults instead of kids, but to each their own. |

Yes, you're right. Most are similar or dubious, but we only need to find that one good job that isn't to be successful. I spent many days scouring the web, and it paid off. |

Check sites like shexpat around the typical hiring times (May-June for a fall term start and Nov-Dec for a spring term start). We only advertise if we need to fill a position. |
