Hello cafe,
When are unis expected to start for the upcoming fall semester.
More specifically, for those who have successfully applied for employment visas, when will they be dispatched?

Middle of August is when things kick off. Not sure about visas being "despatched". They do not just appear. They have to be applied for ! And collected.

You lost me scot47. I was referring to the visa holders and not the visas.

...and i am using the first meaning of dispatch.
dispatch |disˈpaCH|
verb [ with obj. ]
send off to a destination or for a purpose

How do you propose getting a visa ? Who will physically take your passport to the Embassy and get that stamp in it ?

I think he means that he has the visa secured in his passport, but is still not in Saudi. Presumably the question of what next is a matter between him and his school.

Meange, have they not told you? Are they not responding to your emails?

10 bucks says you'll get no email until the one that says, "Report to class at 8am tomorrow."

23 August is when classes are due to start at universities. Teachers are expected to be "on seat" a week before.

You can expect a call or email with a suggested travel date. Be warned - they won't give you much notice. Two days notice is not unusual but you can negotiate for more time if necessary. Most government institutions gave said they want faculty on campus on Sunday 16th August. However, the world doesn't end if you are not there. The first few weeks are typically very understaffed and nobody has a clue what is going on, including the old hands.

Lots of people start after the official start date. Perhaps a third?

For starters, inform HR that you've received your visa and are ready to travel. You need to know when they expect you to be in country. Since you're direct hire with a government university, as soon you've heard back from HR, you'll need to contact the SACM (Administration Affairs Dept.) to arrange your travel from the US.

Why is this necessary for direct hire candidates?
Is this obligatory or just precaution?

The SACM is an administrative division of the Ministry of Education; this is another one of their functions for new employees. In fact, I assume you'd sent them your entire visa application packet as opposed to an expensive visa agent. Anyway, contact the SACM (http://www.sacm.org/Departments/AdminDep.aspx).

My direct hire employer, not the SACM, arranged my flight for me when I first went to KSA.

I also was a direct hire. The SACM admin dept arranged my flight and even called me while I was at the airport to make sure I'd received my e-ticket. In fact, the SACM had emailed me about making flight arrangements and had attached a fight request form.

If the OP is unsure, she can contact her HR.
