Actually, their opinion doesn't count because they're not qualified teachers. How do we know they're not qualified teachers? Well, if they were, they wouldn't be posting on the "Vietnamese" board now would they?

You know nothing about qualifications, VietCanada, except the online cert you have, so by your own reasoning, you should butt out of conversations about other types of qualifications. Leave the quals discussions to those of us who have a clue about quals beyond online certs.
And I have seen ZERO posters who have worked in Vietnam and Asia who agree with you here - you conveniently overlook that at every possible occasion.
I challenge you to find and copy here even one comment from one thread here agreeing with you that most jobs in Asia/Vietnam are teaching children and that online certs are therefore the standard for the region- you'll be searching from now til doomsday. |

Just chiming in again, as someone who has only an online cert, that an online cert is great for fulfilling legal requirements and little else. I lucked out into the positions I've been in (including a possible one with this Saudi employer that looks like it'll work out..) On the other hand, a face-to-face cert leads to jobs asking much fewer questions (like that possible one in Saudi that may not work out if they really really hate my online cert) with the CELTA being the most recognized one and therefore the best investment overall.
That all said, I would actually suggest to newbies who don't know if the teaching game is for them to get an online cert and see if they can hack it in Korea, Japan, China or Thailand before anything. Vietnam is TEFL Asia's "Hard Mode" IMHO considering how much of it depends on landing in the country and then just running about building your life as opposed to being guided through it by a company (except maybe Thailand I guess). |

Are you moving on to Saudi Arabia now? After you've tried it for a few months, I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts about what life and work is like there. I've considered doing a year or two there so I can buy a house and car here in Vietnam without taking a loan. |

| Sure thing Luke. Frankly, I'm a little nervous about the whole endeavor, but I guess there's always Bahrain if I get thirsty or crave pork chops all of a sudden. That all said, Spain drove me to the brink of sanity so I figure even Saudi is only a step up - at least I'll be able to invest in The Future. |
