Go here:

Put Shenzhen in the search box and you'll get a few returns.
Why not get into conversation with a SZ school and ask them how they feel about certification.
If you can get a job with what you have now, you can use your earnings to finance study.
A quick look shows 7-12RMB pm as going rate.
If your partner already has accom then your employer may pay an allowance which would be cheaper for them than providing a school apartment themselves. |

Can anyone chime in on my situation? Are these realistic goals I have set? Would commuting from Shenzhen to Hong Kong be an option for training? Are there other certifications you might recommend? Do you think I will have visa or employment issues due to my DUI and lack of experience?
Any and all input is appreciated! |
I expect that there are still plenty of teaching jobs in Shenzhen. But as far as things like certification and experience go, it depends where you want to work. If you had a couple years of teaching experience, I'd suggest skipping the certification. But for you, taking the Trinity course is a good idea.
I believe that the course itself is comparable to the CELTA, which I took. The teaching practice is a real help and it will look good on a resume. Personally I wouldn't expect too much from them in terms of job placement.
Commuting daily from Shenzhen to Hong Kong isn't desirable, because one doesn't need this extra stress during a busy teaching course. You may find it necessary though, because even budget lodging in HK isn't cheap.
Something else to be aware of is that many Shenzhen employers are quick to promise the Z-visa and slow to deliver. It is a bigger hassle there than in other parts of China. |

Like many who have done the HK run, Shenzhen is nearby, but would be time consuming while you're in middle of studies. If you want to stay in Kowloon, there are affordable places, such as Chungking Mansions hostels, and others along that area. A bit seedy, but pretty decent enough for a short stay.

Have you checked if Shenzhen offers any kind of TESOL/TESL course? You might be able to take your training there. Sometimes the government will allow you to get by without the 2 year experience rule by taking a government run TEFL course. |

Somebody please correct me if I am wrong, but Shenzhen I believe currently sticks to the two years of experience visa rule. It appears that you are American? I am pretty sure Shenzhen also currently requires a national background check. This would mean an FBI check which is going to take about four months. I am pretty positive that at the end of the wait for the check you will be denied the z-visa. I have not read on any forum or board anybody receiving a visa if they have anything on their check. Doesn't matter how old or trivial it is. If you search on FBI here alone you will find some good info.
The above poster makes a good point about the TEFL in China course in lieu of the two years. I believe at present the TEFL in China is only offered in Shanghai and Beijing. And no, getting the more prestigious TESOL cannot be a substituted for the two years. Pretty crazy huh?
Unless my two opinions about Shenzhen are wrong, I am afraid you may have to change your plans. Hong Kong is great, but you insinuate that you are on a budget and HK accommodation can add up quick for your sardine can sized room. |
