I'm just wondering why there is such a disparity between college/university teaching jobs in the UAE ?

HCT appear to pay around 24000AED all inclusive and that appears to be the highest (unless someone is in management etc.), whereas Adveti pay around 12000AED with accommodation, but that is nowhere near . Even other universities cannot match HCT, and even offer supervisory positions around 17000AED.

The oil companies pay around 30 and you get to live for free on the camp and do the 3 day weekends in the smoke. 24 with a kid would be hard if you have bills back home and rent in Abu Dhabi.

Because they can... there are no rules... they pay what they want. I would expect to see HCT salaries drop under the new management.

And I doubt that female teachers could or would want to live on "the camp." The majority of the highest pay jobs in the Gulf are not open to women.

Plus, this seems like a ploy to discourage expats from applying while favoring qualified Emiratis.

There are no qualified Emiraties, at least ones willing to go into a classroom and teach 20 hours a week!

When you say working for oil companies - are we still talking UAE here or have we moved over to Saudi ? I've never seen any UAE oil companies advertising.

I think even if HCT salaries do drop, they will still be one of the most sort after places to work at. Although I've seen some posts complaining about the HCT regime (and we could complain about most organisations to a certain extent), the fact they pay a hell of a lot more than other places still makes it very attractive.

You're very new to all this and just because you haven't seen an ad doesn't mean that they don't exist. LOL The UAE is one of the richest oil producers and dragonpiwo just got an oil company job there. Regular positions have come over the years with ADNOC and Petroleum Institute... where most of the work is in Abu Dhabi and they hire both men and women for the more common UAE salary and benefits. These days they seem to be mainly doing local hires. The oil business doesn't hire as many teachers as Aramco though. Not sure who our dragon works for, but he goes out into the field to teach.

I disagree about HCT staying sought after. Their reputation as an employer has been heading downhill for the last 10+ years and it just totally nose dived into the sewer. There may still be some native speakers who are desperate enough for the money that they think it is tolerable to enslave themselves for a few years to try to save some money. "Attractive" is not a word that I would use to describe any job there any more. All the current teachers that I know are carefully calculating their financial goals to get the hell out as soon as they can. Some have already given notice to leave at the end of first semester. I also have friends who went on leave this year and decided to hell with them and didn't even bother to return... abandoning their furniture and stuff there.

There are many hoping that this new upper management will be dumped when the Ministry figures out how much damage they are doing to the reputation of HCT and education in the UAE, but as usual, it depends on wasta rather than educational needs of students.

Yeah that's okay. I will happily take one of their jobs then.

Well, nw...
You have been forewarned. Be careful what you wish for. NS and VS, et al. have spelled it out. HCT is on a fast, downward spiral. You may want to explore UAEU or ZU. Not sure what the conditions are like there these days. The only redeeming quality at HCT was the talented, devoted colleagues with whom I was privileged to know and work with on teams. Money cannot buy one's mental and physical health.

As we've all said before, the golden days are over. In any case, we wish you luck in your future endeavors.

Regards,
PS

Seems the golden age is over wherever you go, so sometimes you have to bite the bullet and have a go. It all depends on circumstances of course. I can imagine it being tough with dependants or a spouse, but as I have neither that's not a concern. I've explored most of the colleges/uni in the area in terms of speculative emails and correspondence but had little in the way of replies and I'm not at the level of "English Professor" advertisements in terms of research aims and papers. So I keep looking, so that's why I mention HCT, Adveti (around 12AED + 9 accomm) and the occasional sub-uni outlets, as those are the few places I have had positive (or any) feedback from !

Most of my friends who have decamped (or are planning to decamp) are single. It is the "married with children" who can't afford to leave now... and are quickly not being able to afford to stay. Although salary and benefits are significantly worse (cost of housing and set up for newbies have skyrocketed), it is the treatment of the teachers and ever more unpredictably unprofessional management that is killing it as a job. It is a job that you take just hoping that you can last through a contract to try to save some money.

Since the three major government employers --- HCT, Zayed, and UAEU --- are slated to have their English foundation year programs phased out in 2018 ("Foundation year at UAE state universities to be scrapped from 2018"), it makes sense for these unis to cut back on teacher hiring, salaries, and benefits for these programs, which were deemed ineffective.

I don't see that at all. It is not as if the teachers in these 3 institutions are doing an inferior job in terms of their dedication to these students, working the same number of hours or in some cases more and putting up with the same type of institutional nonsense on a day to day basis!
