How can you afford to work FOR NO PAY for three months while you visit China? And why would you do something like that?

If the police come knocking on the door while you're teaching, how will you prove that you're volunteering and not receiving any money? If it were as simple as just telling them that you're volunteering, nobody would ever get in trouble for working illegally.

OP:

You're being scammed. Arrive on a Z visa or stay home. Any school that suggests otherwise isn't authorized to hire foreign teachers. Trouble awaits.

Yes, volunteers can come and teach without a z-visa. There is a special visa classification for that. Obviously, the organization has to be authorized by the government for that type of non-profit work. Assuming you are actually volunteering, and the organization is on the up and up, it still begs the question as to why they want you to come on a tourist visa, which is the wrong visa and can land you in hot water.

This is fairly recent and would probably serve as a useful guideline for the particular situation.
