|
|
Hello,
Does anyone have recent experience with the Teacher's Diploma at Universidad Panamerica?
I ask because I've seen it recommended several times here in the forums, but I also saw a post where someone said it is no longer SEP-accredited.
Can anyone confirm whether the Teacher's Diploma it still accepted by SEP?
Has anyone done it in the past few months and if so, would you recommend it over a CELTA?
I'm looking for a certification that will enable me to make a long-term go of teaching in Mexico. I don't have a teaching certification here in the USA, nor do I have an degree in Education. I do have volunteer experience teaching ESL to adults.
Thank you! |

I would suggest writing to them and asking. You might find the answer on the website:
http://www.up.edu.mx/en/clenguas/mex
It is an excellent course, but if it is not recognized by the SEP it will not be as valuable as one that is. |

I have an American friend who took the course at the Unversidad Panamericana last year, and she was completely disappointed with it. Since she is a very smart lady with many years of experience teaching both English and Spanish, on the strength of her comments about the course, I would not recommend it to anyone looking for teaching work in Mexico. |

But the course is not designed for people with years of experience, it is designed for people who are new to teaching, so perhaps she was disappointed because it was too basic for her. Do you happen to know who the teacher was? I took the course about 6 years ago, so that I would have a SEP recognized credential, and I did find it basic (for myself) but would recommend it to a new teacher. But if the teacher has changed that could make a complete difference. |

She wasn't the only one unhappy with the course. She told me that none of the students were pleased with it, both those who had teaching experience and novices. Apparently, the instructor knew a lot about theory related to language teaching and applied linguistics but had little or no idea about how to run the course as advertised. Perhaps that's why it is no longer approved by the SEP. And, sorry, I don't know the name of the instructor. |

I took the course last year. The Mexican students were the MOST disappointed. One had teaching experience; the rest did not. At the end of the course, we were notified that the SEP no longer recognized the course. One student went to a lawyer; she was so angry and disappointed. She decided against going forward with the case. I mention it to demonstrate the level of dissatisfaction. |

Thanks for the update, it sounds like there have been huge changes, and not for the better, since I took the course, so I won´t be recommending it any longer. Too bad, it WAS excellent when I took it. |
