I used the ANB for a few years while in Jeddah. I have also used the Riyadh Bank and NCB. ATM cards should work outside KSA. Check with your bank. All banks in KSA have telephone advice lines which you can use to access competent English-speaking staff for advice.
Staff at your local branch may have limited English. |

Given that Saudi bank accounts can get locked if there's an issue with the account holder's status (e.g., not reentering the country in time), you might think twice about using ANB or any other KSA bank as your primary account as opposed to a financial institution in your home country. See "IQAMA expired, bank account blocked" (http://forums.eslcafe.com/job/viewtopic.php?t=108920). |

I agree 100% with what you said. But what do you do when your financial institutions back home aren't reliable either? |

Look into joining one of the major established credit unions in your US city. Mine has been around since 1953 and was mainly for the state university's faculty, staff, and students. I use their bill pay system and have never had issues emailing them while overseas if I have questions about my account. Plus, my wire transfers from Samba Bank (in KSA) to the US took no more than 3 business days to show up in my credit union account. |

Credit Unions in the UK are more basic than the ones you have in Canada and the USA. Typically a UK Credit Union does not offer "transactional accounts". That means you cannot pay in cheques or transfer money into an account from abroad. |

ANB debit cards with "visa" logo should be able to be used from outside Saudi.
You may have to inform/check with your bank prior to travel and/or register for online banking as well as phone banking ahead of time.
One thing to keep in mind is that to access your online ANB account, you must be sent (and then input) a 4 digit code into your sign-in page.
Unlike some, I rarely travel with my Saudi phone roaming, so I am unable to check my balance, etc. while outside.
That being said, I transfer the lot each month anyways, so it's not much of an issue for me.
One customer was told that they may call a certain ANB number from abroad in order to receive the prompt (4-digit) on their US cell phone, but it took more than 24 hours to arrive, (if I'm recalling that correctly). |

ANB issued me with a credit card. When leaving I had problems as a result. I should have cancelled the card 90 days (60 ?) before departure but did not. They insisted that I leave 25,000 SAR in my bank account in case there were any last-minute transactions on my ANB Visa card.
I eventually got the 25,000 back, but only after my heavies in Jeddah visited the bank a few times. |

Thank you Scot. I was about to ask if it was a good idea to open a credit card in saudi. I would rather not deal with this mess more than I have to. Probably best to pay in cash, and when need be use my credit card from back home. |
