It is a great article and shows how different it is from the rest of the Gulf and Middle East in general. Modernity has brought a few problems, but they are doing a better job of handling them than the other countries have done.

Interesting read but I doubt many MOM students would be able to read it-unless translated into Arabic or rewritten in simplified language of words with no more than one syllable. |

Perhaps it would interest a few of them enough that they made an effort. I would suggest working in groups...

On the evidence of Foundation level placement tests just graded....there might be one group of 3[that includes the teacher] who might be able to approach a text like that..... |

Obviously not entry level... ... but that is not the only level that teachers have in Oman. I only taught entry level my first year, the other 5 years the majority of my classes could have dealt with this, some with more difficulty than others... and written about it.

There will be a different system in each institution. SQU is not using the same system or materials as the Ministries or the many private colleges.
One can't generalize with any accuracy...

The point of this post-
SHARE the article…… or not…. But I think it's worth printing out if you work in Oman. I don't anymore, but have already printed it for my students in the U.S. and shared it with my whole family and circle of friends. Yay me. |

From what I gather, Tazz was referring to the ministry colleges. So was I.
The majority of teachers would be working in one of these.
SQU is only a small contingent within the expat teaching community of Oman.
Generally speaking, the syllabus and the materials are tightly controlled by the institutions with very little freedom left for the individual teacher. |
Wherever he "meant" - this is what he said,

Nowadays, all materials in post-foundation programs are strictly set and the syllabus is tightly scripted with certain pages in the text book to be covered every week. |
Which is demonstrably incorrect for probably more than half of the EFL teachers in the country. There are over 200 Language Center teachers just at SQU plus 15-20 private universities.

Thanks for posting Noelle and apologies for going off topic.
However, a reality check was needed for those who haven't taught in the country for decades and are whistling Dixie out of their ...

Obviously VS was employed during the 'Halcyon Days' of working here-and had the good fortune to work at SQU....As pointed out, and backed by credible statistics, many [most?] of us do indeed teach at The CAS/ MOM colleges-and the standards at entry level are pretty low! And I stand by my original comment, that only a small fraction of our students would be able to approach a piece of journalistic writing, interesting as it is.... |
