Hi,

So I have a master's in Education (ELT), a Trinity TESOL certificate and currently teaching at an Eikaiwa in Japan. I'm interested in working for a public school without using any of the big recruiters. My contract finishes in March, so I'm looking for positions around then or April.

What's the best way to get a solo public school job? Would it be worth contacting schools in my area directly? Are there any other job sites apart from Gaijinpot or Ohayosensei where these positions will be advertised?

Thanks.

"Would it be worth contacting schools in my area directly?"

For private schools, yes. For public schools, wouldn't be better to contact BoEs?

How about private schools?

For private schools, you can check their website for job ads. Usually, they want to recruit teachers (aka Japanese teaching license owners), not ALTs, but you can ask. If they like you enough, they can help you to get a rinjimenkyo.

How's your Japanese? If your are going to cold-call it, you'll have to know enough to get in touch with the right person at the BOE, find out about when and how to bid on the contract and compete with the perfectly fluent Japanese salesmen who will be bidding against you. Getting a direct hire gig usually takes some connections, timing, and luck. They are not often advertised.

Actually... sometimes direct hire BOE's are once in a blue moon - publicly listed on job sites. But, not often.

Almost always word of mouth. I got some intel on a position in my prefecture. Friend of a friend said someone wants to quit in March so there will be a position in April.

I went down with a Japanese resume and visited the BOE directly. They said they would contact people in the fall.

Grasping at straws here, but I am looking to get out of dispatch ALT work.

I work in a direct hire position. But it's still mostly a team teaching gig, not solo teaching. Hiring is always done first via word of mouth and if no one can be found locally, an ad is posted to Ohayosensei. I think that only happened once though and I suspect my BoE hopes it never happens again.

I would not recommend a job like this unless you just have a BA.
Once you get a MA and/or are certified in your own country, it would get frustrating, if you aren't even invited to meetings and just have to do what you are told.
It is hard when your opinion is not valued and you deal with myopic people.

I must team teach and some teachers are useless, just stand there, or speak too much Japanese or don't even bother to plan for the class and expect the foreigner to do everything.

My Japanese is good enough to do that, that's true. I usually don't hesitate to contact bigwigs when I want something. Well, I have to put up with being rebuffed nearly each time, but it works sometimes and it's worth it. And I got my job (direct hire) by connections, that's true too. But if you don't try, you'll get nothing, that's for sure too... We need to be bold to get anything in life (my own belief).

Oops, I meant to quote the OP and ask about his Japanese.
Be bold! Live large! Damn the torpedoes! I hear you N-Y!
