Can we assume that you're not an American? Or are you including your country of origin on the list of countries that you have "visited"?

I realized I didn't explain why I thought Germany was the best country I visited. When I remember back to when I just visited Germany and didn't live here, I'd say the rolling green hills, red tiled roofs (at least in southern Germany), the bread and the trains. |

Turkey hands down for living in, visiting, sights, history, culture, friendliness, food, and natural beauty. Working there is all right (far from perfect but also far from enough to deter me given the rest of its advantages). Current government is horrible.
To visit, I also very much liked Jordan and Bulgaria.
I've never been to Central Asia but I think a lot of the Stans would be right up my alley. |

New Zealand... |
Shhhh! Don't tell everyone, they'll all want to go, and never, ever leave.
Erm, my favourite place? Definitely not NZ... oh, no, NZ is horrible. My favourite would have to be the UAE; so much culture, agriculture, beautiful coastlines and lovely, lovely people... much nicer than Kiwis. |

For me, probably Nepal. Why? Travel writer Bradley Mayhew says it perfectly: "Where else can you trek for weeks among the world's highest mountains, explore medieval temples and then track tigers through steamy jungle plains? Honestly, nothing even comes close to Nepal." Honorable mentions include Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Botswana and Malaysia (well, Malaysian Borneo anyway). |

Can't agree but I was in Nepal just before their civil war started.
Too much inequality. |

To live on land, either Thailand or Taiwan. Taiwan is more expensive but cleaner and more sophisticated. Both you could either live in the mountains or by a nice beach. Both have varied and inexpensive restaurants. If you had to deal with the reality of visas I don't think Taiwan would be much of an option for retirement though.
If I was on a sailboat, Thailand or the puget sound/gulf islands...not sure on that one. Some of the islands in Thailand are amazing and there are less boaters, but there are less islands on the whole (especially with good anchorages) + tour boats everywhere.
To work as an English teacher, China. Salary vs. cost of living is very favorable. Cheap tickets to many spots for vacation. You can buy almost anything, and some things very cheaply, over Taobao.
For vacation, definitely Thailand. It's a great country and it's just more geared to tourism, generally in a good way. Things related to travel and tourism run more smoothly than most poorer Asian countries and are very affordable.
If I was single? Maybe Vietnam for one or both. The average women there are still good looking. Something in the water? |

I'm really impressed with Georgia as a country to visit. Very nice warm people, history and amazing nature, food and wine. Living here is probably not practical from an economic standpoint, sadly. |

I choose a state: Oaxaca, Mexico.
Fresh produce?
Cuisine?
Drinks?
Coffee and caf'e culture?
Books shops and poetry seen?
Colonial architecture?
Archaeological sites?
Contemporary art?
Classical musicians?
Folk Music?
Artiseans and crafts?
Museums?
Forrests?
Mountains?
Waterfalls?
Beaches?
Friendly people?
Sure it has social problems, what place doesn't, but in places to visit, it really has it all. |
