The longest I heard of were couple of Brits who were there for over 30 years but they werent teaching. One lady was with the British Embassy.

One German born American was there for 26 years and never once saw another country neighboring the place.

I still dont know how he did it.

I had an American colleague at KFUPM who spent his entire working iofe there. He retired and went back to the USA but found it too weird after such a long absence. He came back to Dhahran to work and died there.

People react to KSA in different ways. See recent post by Johnslat. Or consider my American colleague who chose to spend his entire working life at KFUPM in Dhahran.

No drink, no movies, no dating, no sex, no eating with friends from an opposite sex in a restaurant, no nightclubs, the overwhelming heat, the call to prayer 5 times a day...Saudi Arabia is clearly for the insane only.

Well, actually you can do all of those things. The heat is very pleasant in the winter and everywhere has great a/c for spring/autumn - fortunately the summer is for holidaying in Europe.

No drink: well we all know that's absolute rubbish

No movies: many compounds have a cinema

No dating: maybe in your case

No sex: ditto

No eating with friends from the opposite sex: people don't check your Iqamas to see if you're married when you walk into a restaurant

No nightclubs: many compounds have an equivalent with DJs or bands

Heat: personally I find the weather very tolerable. It is only really hot for four months of the year. I was in Riyadh which has zero humidity which made it strangely bearable. Winters are cool, spring and autumn are very pleasant. Give me four months of very hot over 12 months of year round 80% humidity like some places in SE Asia.

The call to prayer: Presumably you knew that they prayed before you went there.

It seems obvious that you are another example of someone who stayed in your room for your entire time in KSA. If you had ventured out you might have realised that you can actually have some fun there.

Erm, you're not allowed to have sex unless you're married. Most places do NOT put ESL teachers in a compound, you'll have an apartment and have to live by Saudi 'laws'. All the stuff you mention only happens in a compound - hardly anyone gets one of those.

There is NO FUN in the KSA.
