Hello there,
I'm currently teaching some very enthusiastic Chinese students who love role plays. Can anyone recommend any books with a bunch of role plays that I can use in the classroom? |

I don't have any books to recommend but for a travel lesson I used these http://www.esl-lounge.com/level3/lev3rolecardshols.php
At the hotel
Hiring a car
Lost luggage at airport
In a restaurant
modifying them as I saw fit. I'm sure you could get ideas online, adapt them and put them into a document building up a nice collection.
What you could do of course is teach them the appropriate vocabulary, terms first (for complaining, apologising etc)
E.g.
Complaining
I’d like to make a complaint.
I am not satisfied/happy with…
I'd like… a refund/to get my money back.
The service… leaves a lot to be desired/could be better
The service is… not so good/bad
very bad/awful/ terrible/ disgraceful/shocking (stronger)
Please… fix the problem/sort this problem out (as soon as possible/immediately/now/right away/right now)
Apologising
I'm sorry to hear that ... /
I'm (very) sorry about that, but...
I do apologize/ I apologise for any inconvenience caused
I'm sure that we can sort it out.
Please tell me exactly what the problem is/what happened?
Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused
I’m sorry but… we cannot/this is not possible |

I just wanted to say how helpful your examples are to the website's rather spare "do this" direction. There's so little specific information to ESL materials! |

There are plenty of English language teaching resources available on the Internet --- many are free. Even this site has a section specific to classroom ideas and teaching --- see Stuff for Teachers. Plus, there are ESL activity books you might consider owning. One of my favorites is "Zero Prep: Ready-to-Go Activities for the Language Classroom." |

The problem is to get the students to use the language that they do not yet have to take part in the role play. How do you impart to them what they should say ? |

Ditto that, given that none of us knows these students' levels and language needs. This is why it's best to suggest EFL teaching websites rather than specific lessons and activities. |

There are plenty of role play activities available on the umpteen ESL resources on the Net. Hopefully these students already have a language textbook for the class; additional role play actvities would supplement that material. But since the OP mentioned that these students are in China, who knows what they're using. |

They're using IGCSE textbooks. I'm aware of the plethora of websites out there that have role plays, but my time for scouring the web searching for them is limited. I'll do a search for the book you mentioned on the weekend. |

However, the Zero Prep book focuses on a variety of pair and small group activities covering the four language skills. It's not full of role play prompts.
As for ESL websites, there's no need to scour dozens of them; just choose about 4 or 5 as your regular, go-to source for activities.
By the way, for a bit of fun, check out RP Generator. I had a good laugh when I put in the names of "Scot47" and "Johnslat." |
