I have been offered a few private gigs of late, all from being recommended by my Chinese co-workers. I have turned these down in the past but the additional income would be very welcome in the new year!

Most recent:

1. Meeting once per week with a middle school student over dinner to allow her to practice oral English (300rmb + dinner, as parents own a nice restaurant)

2.Teaching a very small class (5 max) of elementary school students.
(2 hours once per week, all materials prepared for me. 1000rmb)
This one may be too good to turn down in my opinion?

Since I am new to this, my main question is, what is the going rate for the following:
1. one-one oral english?
2. teaching small groups of young learners?

I'd say both of those are very good offers, especially if you don't have to commute for them (if you really like the food at the restaurant that one would be fine with a bit of a commute).

I recently gave a quote of 260 per hour for one-on-one tutoring with a student
that will meet me in the sitting room of my building.

I was told that it might be too low since Chinese piano teachers charge 300 to 500 per hour.

Your rates seem ok to me.

I think that a lot depends upon location, your expertise, and your reputation.

True, and on top of that your drive and desire to get the well paid gigs I guess. I have never looked for private work in my 2 years in SH but it seems to look for me haha.
I took on a full time school position as I had no desire to take on private students. But I can clearly see how one could quite easilly boost their monthly income from mid-teens to early twenties plus potentially doubling savings whilst still living the good life Smile
Hmmm, maybe I should get off my lazy ass!
Good luck to all I say!!!

Forget privates. If your boss approves, corporate gigs pay more and require less work because you'll work with adults are motivated.

..and they usually have a training room which puts things on a better footing.
Only trouble with corps is they are optional and you never know how many are going to attend. Still they pay the same for 2 or 22.
I did an 'over a meal' gig for a couple and their teenager who were intending to migrate to Canada.
Mainly likely questions for the interview in Beijing.

I charge 350 yuan per hour plus taxi fare. I was told many people get 500 in the wealthy neighborhoods but I did not want to push my luck.

True. Plus, you never know when the program will be terminated. My connection to corp work came through a Chinese friend who spoke impeccable English, but sometimes lost his corporate gig because he was Chinese. He'd call me in to take over when that happened.

A good way to develop corp gigs is to visit a local language school and do just enough work to stay under the radar. Let the owner know that you're interested in doing corporate. The Cambridge business books are great for reading and can help you to develop situational oral English conversations.
