Guys, please look at my substance, rather than my form.

Honestly, I do not want to get in a debate about global issues, form of "its" etc.

Rather, I simply want to create some dialogue about what skills every citizen should have, and find a way to add to that field. I understand my plans are still sketchy; but, I just want to solicit input.

In the same way as medicine has universal diagnostic procedures, a list of about 550 medicines that every country should have, etc. I would like to bring some consolidation to the very fragmented world of education.

The "substance" is the problem here, ebook. Educational methods are not hard sciences. Spiral, if I recall, teaches European university students. I work with learning-disabled 6/7 year olds who can't write in L1. You teach/counsel (?) Chinese high school students, if I recall. Do you see our skepticism at how you plan to provide us useful videos?

There's nothing wrong with skepticism. Rather, it's the cynicism that nothing can be done.

I truly think a test like the GED is considered the basic, minimum standard of competencies and skills needed to be able to enroll in university. Some will be far above, some will be just passing; but, all will have passed.

But, rather than be a GED prep course, such as a Kaplan book, the key is to teach the skills underneath (i.e. quadratic equations and their uses, as opposed to simply "quadratic equations for the GED").

Yes, it's true, people very in their needs, etc. There is no magic bullet that can turn people into Pulitzer Prize winning authors, rocket scientists, and tech entrepreneurs all in one swoop. But, I believe with good curriculum design, it could be a general "collection of skills" necessary for every citizen to have basic competency.

Every citizen of what? If you mean 'the world,' you are simply howling at the moon.

I think preparing for the GED would be a basic goal that 99.9% of the world could be used for. It accepted in 97% of US Universities and can be taken in over 100 countries.

I do not know of any other basic standardized test that would ascertain basic skills in one sitting.

Realize that arguably the best of these free online universities, University of the People, need a GED.

Hence, 99% of the world could use this proven basic proficiency in English language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. Then, they can move onto community college, University of the People, or maybe even four year universities and get technical skills that will help get paid higher.

Spiral, you join the other half dozen or so of us who have asked repeatedly who the target audience is. Yet, still no coherent answer from the OP. I suspect it's the citizens of the planet Mongo. Or perhaps from the land of Oz. Or maybe those of the Alpha Centauri star system. The United Federation of Planets? Rolling Eyes

Additionally, the OP has gone from his initial post of ESL videos to GED instructional materials.

It's impossible to bake a cake without specific ingredients. Razz

I think you could benefit from some exposure to the real world, beyond your narrow experience of academia. Many of the world's instructors are trying to teach "citizens" to read a medication label properly, recognize symbols in a driver's exam, or just write a coherent paragraph. Some students come from pre-literate cultures - will your videos teach them how to hold a pencil?

If you want to target pre-academia, that's totally fine (and makes sense), but your audience is much smaller than you imply here. 99% of the world taking the GED? You really live on an elite cloud in the sky, don't you? You make it abundantly clear that you lack experience in the field you wish to revolutionize!
