Personally, I would not be worried about working in Xinjiang, but I do think this is very relevant. I could see the rules changing suddenly at any time as far as CBC's go. I would not want to be out a semester's work because of a sudden requirement for an FBI check.
In general I'm totally against these stupid checks, but I can understand it if they became a lot stricter in Xinjiang. If things get any worse they might even put a ban on foreigners for a while. Then again, with all the gas, I bet they need English teachers badly. Wow, it's like medieval times or something. |

Would you mind telling the thread about the air quality and environment there? I'm curious about the region but I know some of the worst polluted cities in China are in Xinjiang, and that's saying something. |

In my time here, I've seen more days of blue skies with puffy white clouds than days without, and it's definitely a big difference from the dull, gray skies of most mainland cities. I haven't lived in Urumqi. That said, it's true that cities in northern Xinjiang burn coal for heat in the winter. Cities in southern Xinjiang are plagued by sandstorms, which bring about their own health problems. |

I lived in Urumqi for a year. Summer was hot and dry, but not terribly uncomfortable. Occasionally a weather front brought in a sandstorm. In winter the environment changed dramatically. Sub-zero temperatures were the coldest I've experienced in my life with no letup for months. Weather forecasts often said "smoke." Not haze or smog--smoke, presumably from coal heating and factory emissions that don't easily disperse in winter. So the sky was white, and in a different way than normal overcast weather. Just the same, I didn't see many people wearing face-masks there. Bottom line is that I don't recommend spending a winter in Xinjiang unless you have a compelling reason or no other choice. |

| I'm from the UK and have been told by a Chinese visa agency that I don't need a CRC to get a Z visa. Don't know how true this is though. |
