Hi people! I'm looking at a job offer in Beijing and would appreciate information on hosing costs, please. How much does one need to set up an apartment in Beijing, including bond, advance rent, internet, electricity, gas etc? How easy is it to find a suitable place?
Thanks in advance.

The price of an apartment varies from cheap to sky high.

It depends on location, size of apartment, quality of apartment, your willingness to share etc.

I can only speak for myself and say I pay 2500 for my own place but I am a 40 minute subway ride from Tiananmen.

One month rent goes to an agent as a one off fee. One month is deposit. It's up to the landlord how much they want in advance. Some want 3, some 6 and some even demand 12.

Usually they are up for negotiation however.

If you speak Chinese and find a local a agent then your chances of being scammed decrease. Otherwise bring a local so you know you are being charged a rent that is similar to the market rate.

I negotiated a 40% cut on the fee. The young agent was pi$$'d and flat out said no.... his boss called later and agreed....

I did have some problems due to my look, however when i went upfront with the Chinese uni I worked at (the franchise partner of the British Uni.), a different response was obtained.

Don't overlook the advantages of moving into an existing situation.
Your agreement will be with the head lessee not the agent or landlord.
This will likely avoid the heavy upfront costs mentioned by a PP.
