I am going to post in response to this thread but, really, it is applicable to almost any thread that is inquiring about a certain school or ESL company:
Many schools in China are a "roll of the dice". Youse pays your money and youse takes your chances!
What I mean is, a website they offer is always going to tell you the nice things: "located in beautiful such-and-such city, famous for it's wonderful such-and-such (tea, river, mountain, silk, seafood . . . whatever). The school is almost always going to be modern, forward thinking, and have wonderful students and friendly, helpful staff. Your accomodations (shared or single) will have the most modern conveniences and you will surely get extras such as phone, internet, cable tv, refrigerator and microwave oven.
Once you get to said school, things may be a little . . . different. Or maybe not. Maybe things will be exactly as the hiring school said and life will be swell. But just be prepared to find bad with the good. Frustrations, language barrier problems, the "this is China" syndrome.
I'm not saying this to be all negative and convince you to not take a job at this or any other school. Just saying hope for the best and be prepared for the worst. Pore over the contract they offer you and ask questions if you have any. If they are evasive or drag their feet with answers, then take it as a warning sign and move on. Make sure YOU are getting what YOU want in your contract, but still be a little flexible here and there. Bring plenty of comfort things from home (and neccessities as well) and get ready for a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT LIFE than the one you are used to now. |
