I never mentioned your council house, but I did mention your baseless rumours and also asked why you hated the BBC.

As per the last 13 years, you won't have an answer.

I wonder if scotty is paying the BBC TV licence?
Unless if he is over 75, then it will be free from Her Majesty's government. Laughing

Dear Hod,

Sorry, you were arguing so persuasively for doing nothing that I assumed that would have been your choice. Very Happy

What would I have done? Everything I could. Politicians, the press, whatever might put pressure on the right people. Would it succeed? I don't know. But I'd stop only if everything I tired, everything I could think of trying, had absolutely no effect.

Actually, I think if someone in Sir Terry Wogan's position (must remember to
use the proper form of address: " If you are using someone's knighthood with a shortened title, the correct address is "Sir [firstname]", not "Sir [surname]" because, after all, that's important) had thrown his weight around, something would have happened. But that's pure speculation.

What do you think?

Regards,
John

Damned important if you are a true Brit, although we are each time fewer... Sad

Dear Phil_K

I'm afraid we colonialists are usually unfamiliar with the protocol. But then, there's ignorance on both sides of the pond, innit?

Dear Sir John

1. The man himself wouldn’t have minded anyone calling him Sir Wogan, Terry or Tel.

2. It sounds like you and I would've done exactly the same about Saville. Would we have changed anything? Yes, our blood pressure.

The "Sir" thing is honorary and can be taken away. You wouldn't be locked up for lèse-majesté if you omitted the Sir or wrote in the UK press that Sir Wogan should consider golf lessons or a diet. Likewise, the Sir title doesn't add any weight to throw around when wanting to out someone based on rumours. A Sir can be sued for libel as much as the rest of us.

This is the fourth time. I acknowledge sexual crimes against children is an emotional subject and rightfully so. But I promise you, not one single person in the UK publically wrote Saville was committing offences against minors.

Dear Hod,

" . . . not one single person in the UK publicly wrote Savile was committing offences against minors."

I know - and therein lies the pity and the shame, that widespread rumors were sweeping the BBC, but no one lifted a finger.

So, as someone who'd have done the same as I, how do you feel about all those did nothing?

Personally, I consider them to be cowards or worse, but others may be more forgiving.

Regards,
John

Jimmy Savile cannot be stripped of knighthood, say officials
"Those calling for the late Sir Jimmy Savile to be stripped of his knighthood, including the Sun, may well be wasting their time, as the Cabinet Office has revealed that individuals cease to hold the honour after they die."

"In the accompanying news story the paper acknowledged that "currently no one can be stripped of 'Sir' status after they are dead, no matter what crimes comes to light", but says it has vowed to lobby the government to change this and "revoke the disgraced DJ's honour"."

It seems the knighthood got "Sir" Jimmy off the hook!!!

“Ooh ay, I had a lively couple of years, with the tabloids sniffing about, asking round the corner shops – everything – thinking there must be something the authorities knew that they didn’t. Whereas in actual fact I’ve got to be the most boring geezer in the world because I ain’t got no past. And so, if nothing else, it was a ginormous relief when I got the knighthood, because it got me off the hook.”

I have no objections whatsover to people living in state-owned accommodation be they monarchs or TEFLERS. What I object to is wasters like you who go to Saudi, earn a splendid tax-free salary for years and then go home to Alba to enjoy the benefits of a system to which they have contributed little or nothing and then never miss a chance to denigrate the land that has welcomed them. Sir, you are a parasite.

sheikh, are you calling scotty "Sir"?
When did he receive this privileged knighthood? Laughing
I do not think he was teaching English for a charity purpose to get that title from you? Laughing

Renting a council house does not make one a parasite. Furthermore, ex-pats who don't pay enough NI contributions do not receive a full pension; nor do they qualify for Jobseeker's Allowance.

State Retirement Pension is a National insurance Benefit which is paid to those who have contributed ERNICS. I did for years and paid my share of taxes. sadly this is not the case for many of the Sheikh's Loyalist Tory Pals. Have a look at the track record of the owner of "The Daily Mail" and at all those real parasites in the House of Lords.

Being pragmatic about things, if you or I had blown the whistle, as I said already, we'd have changed nothing but our blood pressure. To successfully expose such a pillar of the community, as he was, would've required Gandhi levels of commitment. You worked for a living and still do. You wouldn't have had the time or bandwidth (I hate this piece of business jargon) to make a difference.

And how do you know no-one spoke up? The police didn't listen to victims. Why would they listen to whistle blowers?

It's easy to take your stance in hindsight, but libel laws and getting your voice heard by the right people mean it's easier said than done, alas.

Of course it doesn´t. Where do I suggest that it does? I know decent hard-working people who rent their homes from the state.

Dear Hod,

I don't disagree with what you wrote about the immense difficulty and the poor chances of achieving any success.

But you would have tried, and I would have, too.

In fact, I have tried in a similar but less morally/ethically reprehensible situation. And fortunately, the person in question was removed from temptation.

Regards,
John
