Hi everyone, I've been researching extensively the past few weeks on my options on where I can teach without a degree.
Im a uk citizen with a 120 hour TEFL and a HND in sports coaching.
Its possible for me to do a working holliday in Japan, korea and Taiwan but I was thinking of working visas as the whv is only for 1 year.
I havent posted on a forum before but I'm finding lots of conflicting and outdated information so this is my last resort.

Welcome to the café, Aidsim!
Teaching without a degree is a recurring topic here. There are numerous threads already, at least one quite recently. I don't have time to look for it right now, but you should be able to find it, and others, without too much trouble. In general, most of Latin America and Europe permit teaching without a degree. (But, of course, employers will usually require a degree, and keep in mind that you will be competing with degreed applicants.) Still, it is possible to work legally.
If you locate the recent threads, there is also discussion of the ins and outs of working in Southeast Asia (although not legally) without a degree, and without a work permit. All of SE Asia now requires a degree.
I would consider the WHV, myself. Even though for only one year, it will provide an opportunity to experience life working abroad, and to decide if you like it enough to develop a long range plan.

WHV in Korea specifically excludes work as an EFL teacher.
If you have completed 2 full years (30 credit hours) of university level study you can get onto the TaLK program ( http://www.talk.go.kr ).
The rest of east and SE Asia, as far as legal work as an EFL teacher requires a degree.
Illegal work still abounds but is not without risk (it is illegal after all). Buxibans in Taiwan or language academies in Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos will often take on illegal teachers to fill classrooms with white faced teachers.
The risks include not being paid (its not like you can complain to a government agency), or getting caught (detention, fined and deported).
Other issues would be the low pay (15-30k baht in Thailand, 35-40k twd in Taiwan, etc., as well as no benefits (you bear the costs of flying in, setting up house, medical insurance, visa/border runs, etc.)
As a UK national, until Brexit is completed, you still have Europe or there is always Latin America.
A final option is to complete a degree and then the world opens up a lot more. EFL will still be here when you are done. Ideally, since your HND was in coaching you might want to pursue a B.Ed.

Thanks everyone, I've been searching through the threads but i cant find much, maybe im doing something wrong, il keep trying !
Yeah I'd rather do it legally so it seems like asia is off limits for now. I read that you need to be enrolled to further study for the TALK programme?
I dont fancy europe just yet so il do some research on latin america.
As for the HND, I really enjoyed the whole coaching/health and fitness part of my course but I've fell away from the sport side so i wouldnt want to keep studying sports just to get a degree when ive lost the passion. |
