Don't come to Japan. Head to China. You have to go to where the work is if you choose to TEFL abroad. The work is not in Japan.

And working for GABA is scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Considering that I got rejected for the third time in the last three weeks,
China certainly would be better.

Plus my union has a current dispute for Gaba. You really want to work for them?

I just want get my foot in the door. I understand GABA is shitty, but it's like a gateway into Japan and better jobs once I'm there. Not really interested in China or any other country for that matter.

This thread is getting off course haha. So... Yea, I didn't pass the GABA interview. Fck me right? Man, I prepared HARD for that. The only company who had replied to my numerous applications rejects me. Oh well, I guess I'm back to waxing floors on the night shift. Pays almost the same anyways.

Yes, being in Japan would increase your chances of getting a job. You're not supposed to look for a job under a tourist visa, though.

You got your college degree in America and finished high school there. That's what many employers ask and care about. From now on if you are asked if you are a native speaker you say yes.

How many places have you applied to and what are they?

Ganbatte, Jesso! Even if you have a light accent (do you?), you can find something. I have a French accent (not that strong, but I have one) and I could find a job. Try rural prefectures and small eikaiwa. They're looking for teachers who can teach 2 languages. I got my job at my high school bc I can teach French too (they have a cooking course, so they want to give students the opportunity to do apprenticeships in France).

Believe in yourself!

Hey thanks guys. Haven't given up. I am working as a darn Janitor now, and my plan is to save enough money to go to Japan as a Language student, on a student visa, and find work once I'm there, since I've heard it's not hard to go from student visa to work visa. I could even try to part time at Gaba once there, to kind of prove myself, then move on to full time to get to stay there.
Who knows, once there I think there will be a hell of a lot more options than what you can choose from abroad.

I've been told I got a thick accent, but If I focus I can tone it down a lot.

As to what places I applied to, a ton. Heart, Joytalk, Shane, Interac, Coco Juku, all the big ones really, hard to list them all, but I applied to all.

Nemu- So you are also a non-native speaker I take it. How did you get into the country?

Where am I a Janitor? I'm working for a cleaning company that mainly works for HEB stores here in the US.

Hey Nemu, well then, it will probably be a similar road for me.

Were you turned down by Gaba or by the immigration office? Any special reason?

By Gaba, of course, why would it be by the immigration office?
They gave no reason, I actually asked for feedback on my interview performance, they just said they had interviewed a ton of people and it was VERY competitive. Having an accent and a less desirable passport, probably put me down the list by default I guess. Plus I have no experience, so of course I didn't do stellar on the demo lessons.

Well from my understanding you can pass all the interviews of Gaba and all but when Gaba send in your application to the immigration office to get your visa you can still be denied due to your citizenship or other reasons.

Really? Where did you get that information, I researched the hell out of GABA, and the interview process and didn't find anything like that anywhere. I don't think that's very common whatsoever. I mean, maybe if you are from a country like North Korea, or something similar they might reject you, but there is no other reason I could imagine.

Don't worry about it man, If you pass the interview process, and Gaba tells you that you are successfully hired, you are golden, cause that's the hard part, as I've tragically learned.
