My experiences and the experiences of all the teachers at my current school have been different. There was a time at the beginning of 2015 when the new laws came into effect and work permits were notoriously difficult to get, but now as longs as the teacher can provide 1) a criminal background check from their home country, 2) a minimum of a 2 year degree, and 3) a TESOL certificate, then its incredibly easy. Just send them in and get the WP back.
In my experience if people are waiting years without being issued their wp, the blame either falls with them in not providing the paper work in a timely manner. This is most commonly an issue with Canadian teachers who have a hard time getting a police check while over seas. Or the blame is with the school not understanding the process or not having a contact in the labor department.
Schools who don't have a contact or aren't willing to pay substantial bribes could have the application process tied up for years. My school does not pay any bribes, but they took the time to invite some contacts in the labor department out to a nice dinner and formed a relationship with them. Now all the paper work is processed quickly. |

How exactly do you know your school doesn't pay a bribe? What evidence do you have to make such a statement? So, your school is a life raft of morality, floating in a sea of corruption.......I seriously doubt it. |

I believe the people I'm talking about have submitted the paperwork properly. It may work out for all of them over a longer period of time - hard to tell in some cases.

These really aren't ethical flaws of foreign teachers here.....
Citing laws is relatively easy but I think there are reasonable teachers out there who take a pass on it in some way and others who have given up after trying to do it right. What percentage is hard to say. I recently heard (you could argue heresay) that one of the major language mills here, one with a reputation for doing it more by the book than others, only has about 15% of their teachers with legal work permits....
Again, could be just talk. |

True enough. The HR department could be doing their own thing, but it would be pretty hard to cover up funds going missing when the school's director is staunchly opposed to paying bribes.
And it's not a sea of corruption. I think many people just assume everyone pays bribes, but there are actually a number of schools who don't do that, and they develop a reputation among the city officials for not "playing the game". But it actually works out for them in the long run because eventually the requests for bribes stop coming.
Since moving to a more "managerial" position, I've gotten to know more of the various directors or managers from other schools around town, and many of them really don't pay into the system as much as you'd expect. Especially the schools which have western management.
On a slightly related note.. Has anyone heard that Americans will be getting 1 year visas starting this year sometime? I imagine that will make the work permit even less desirable for some. |

I bet you Yanks will be happy; you can work illegally now for a year!
Applying a small amount of logic, but given the fact that the average tourist stays 10 days in Vietnam, and the average American gets two weeks vacation, how is increasing the tourist visa to a year going to increase tourist numbers from the US? |

This is not gossip or rumor-spreading.
Authorities are checking the visa documents at some schools and if one is caught teaching on a tourist visa there is a large fine and one person was deported.
Another deportation happened to a teacher at a large private (pseudo international school) in Ciputra (hint hint). It happened 2 weeks ago. |

But aren't you allowed to work for the first three months while the visa is in process? How do the police know how long a teacher has been there? |

You're not allowed to work on a tourist visa at all. You can work temporarily on a business visa while the work permit application is on going. But if you're stringing together business visas for a year, that's a big no-no too. |

Trump or Clinton... either way, I'll stay in Vietnam for the next 4 years. I will say that living in Vietnam for so long has made me much more socialist. Go Bernie. |

I was mostly joking. I actually am a fan of socialism...but not Vietnam's version of it. More of the Scandinavian variety. |

Missed ya, Kurtz.......love readin' yer stuff!
Like yourself, I've departed Viet Nam, sadly! Miss it a fair bit.....but there are a lot of things that I do NOT miss (as I'm certain that you don't miss either!!) such as corruption, lack of anything vaguely resembling sanitation, incompetence, ad so on and on.......
Me? I'm hoping that The States will Feel The Bern!!! |
