Does anyone know what the maximum amount of cash that one can take through an airport is?
Two of my friends have been hassled for taking large sums through. One friend is British and he took out 50K. He had it in his suitcase in a paper bag, they asked him if it was money, he said yes, and they reluctantly let him go. The other friend is from the Philippines, she had 50K RMB and 3K USD, and they told her she had to put it in the bank and was told she couldn't take more than 2K RMB out at a time (!).
So what's the deal? |

It depends on the currency import/export regulations of the countries you travel from/to. Some countries have no import/export limits and some do. Regulations for the mainland stipulate the maximum you can take out is 20,000元. HK has no limit. US/Canada have a $10,000 limit on undeclared cash, but you can bring more if declared.

Your Filipina friend had too much local currency, and was rightfully given her options. Your other friend, if that 50,000 was in his checked baggage then he's crazy. Nobody in their right mind puts valuables in checked bags because baggage handlers are notorious for breaking in and stealing from them. Carrying large sums of cash in carry-on is only marginally safer. He's also very lucky as his money could have been confiscated since he was over the limit and his overage was undeclared. |

The limit is 20,000 RMB and 5,000 USD in foreign currency. They probably told your friend liang wan was the limit for local currency.
I'm not sure why people would be trying to take RMB out. You get much better exchange rates in China on RMB than outside. Just get a Chinese friend to change it. |

Last time I traveled from China to the U.S., I brought back $9,000+ USD back. Half was in my bulging wallet, and the other half was in a carry-on satchel with books in it. The screeners must not have seen the money in the satchel among the books. Nobody said boo to me.
I thought that the limit for taking USD out was $10,000. |

They asked him what was in the paper bag, what a hassling. Wounder what the other side would ask? |

Until very recently I don't think they'd have cared unless it was an obviously large amount of money. You can still take out up to 100,000 RMB a year on your ATM card while overseas (at same rates you get in China) with a pretty small fee per transaction, so it doesn't seem worth them bothering about relatively small amounts. |
