I worked in the UAE at ADU in 2007. I came in on a tourist visa from Bangkok and then I had to go to Bahrain ab0ut 2 or 3 months later to renew the visa. Is this the only work visa available? Do you have to get your degree and TEFL cert attested if a different visa is available?

It's highly doubtful you ever taught at Abu Dhabi University given that you lack a degree:

Regardless, you'd need a TEFL-related MA to compete for positions in the UAE and qualify for a work permit.

I did teach at ADU. I taught Emerati civil servants in the department of continuing education and i also taught the UAE army in the evenings. I don't think an MA TESOL is necessary considering the levels of the students I taught. Most were beginners. That may be why they took me with the qualifications I've got. I never did get a proper work visa though. That was back in 2007 so things may have changed.

That explains it since you were essentially working illegally. An MA is the standard nowadays if you expect to get hired on a work permit.

I answered this question in the other thread. That was an unusual and bizarre situation where ADU was so desperate for teachers who would even complete a semester that they were taking any warm body for even a three month contract. You were working illegally on a tourist visa.

As you suggested, you couldn't get a proper visa because of your lack of credentials. A normal dependable employers takes care of the total visa process. All I ever did was provide my employer with whatever bits of paper they and the Ministry requires... this was in 1992. All that has happened since then is that more paperwork is required now.

In your situation, there would only be a limited number of bottom feeder employers who will not provide you with a legal working visa ... or much else.
