scotty, your title of the post should read "Debt and Suicide in the Gulf".
People commit suicide everywhere because of dept., not only in Qatar or the Gulf. |

Unfortunately, there's not an "Everywhere" forum.
I'll bet I know which "dept.." Human Resources, right?

One of the stupidest things one can do in ANY Gulf country is take out a credit card! In a region where a cross look or an impulsive throwing up of a digit in the heat of the moment in the direction of one of their sacred nationals can get you jailed or straight-up deported, you have to have more than few screws loose to become indentured to a Gulf bank's plastic.
It wouldn't surprise me in the least if the subject individual didn't have one or more issued in his name. Unfortunately, there's something in those Gulf waters that make people think that the rules that apply to mere mortals no longer apply to them. |

Let me guess...Dumb and Dumber? 😜
Question: How can you teach alliteration to the illiterate? |

Help to make them literate first? Then do the details - if you can meet the challenge.
I say this from the perspective of an expat who still does not "get" the nuances of American, or British, or Canadian, or Australian humor - even though I have lived in all of those countries.
Teaching English is tough (partially) because of it's nuances... BUT, don't subtly admonish the locals because they don't "get" your English lessons - and thus are considered illiterate. They are literate (in their language) - but if they are not English literate then that is YOUR job to change that. Why else are you employed as an EFL/ESL instructor? |

Thanks for the heads up! It illustrates my 2nd paragraph regarding nuances.
Carry on with your vernacular..... |

I absolutely agree that it's crazy to get a Credit Card in the GCC. Even if you run one sensibly just cancelling the damned things is an endurance test. I am out here to make money and save, I don't want the temptations of lines of credit - the consequences of being in debt here are not worth the angst. |
