Thanks, and, now that you've reminded me, I actually do know the distinction. You 'imply', I 'infer'. Made a mistake. I've also inadvertently made spelling mistakes and punctuation errors on this forum and elsewhere as well and, no doubt, will do so again in the future. Just about all of us make mistakes when it comes to writing English correctly and, trust me, I've seen you do it on several occasions.... |

| I think your understanding is rather shaky. The two words are different in meaning and in usage. Never mind, go back to the jungles of SE Asia where you clearly dream of being in your role as bringer of Western Civilisation to the benighted natives. |

I assumed you were earlier referring to the below quote.

imply: strongly suggest the truth or existence of (something not expressly stated).
infer:deduce or conclude (information) from evidence and reasoning rather than from explicit statements.
So, in the above quote, like I said in my last post, you were 'implying', I was 'inferring'. I got the two terms mixed up earlier, which I just admitted to. However, if you are saying that you were not implying any such thing originally and that I inferred incorrectly, then all I can say is apologies.

I honestly don't where to start with this one. However, as I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt that you would never make such a seemingly ignorant and boorish comment, without the evidence to back it up, then I'd respectfully ask that you kindly supply the relevant quotes. We can then clear up your mischaracterization from there. Thank you. |

That's the best you got? For your information, the avatar is of Sean Penn, who played the character of 1st Sgt Welsh, in the film The Thin Red Line. Welsh was my favorite character in the film, Penn is one of my favorite actors and that is my favorite movie. I also love the book. Seemed as good a handle and avatar as any and if others don't like it, or wish to draw inappropriate conclusions because they don't know what they are talking about, then that's not my problem. BTW, the film resembles an arthouse movie, makes extensive use of metaphors and was set in the Pacific during World War II. I'd suggest you watch it, but if you are after a "John Wayne" style shoot-'em-up in "the Nam" you'll be very disappointed  . |
