I will be taking a CELTA class and teaching in Vietnam shortly. I will have few possessions and questionably secure housing, so I would like some extra security.
Larger PacSafes seem too bulky. I might try a 5L PacSafe and also get a laptop lock cable.
I have not traveled much. Losing my 40 L backpack would be worse than losing my laptop, so maybe extra security on the laptop is not worth the hassle.
Does anyone here have advice on what level of security is worth the effort? |

You would be better posting on the Vietnam Forum. |

Basic security is not specific to Vietnam. I will probably end up in other countries, too. I was hoping for perspective from someone who has maintained a work life in a variety of accommodations. |

You are over thinking it.
Personal security in SE Asia is no different than it is at home.
Lock the door when you leave.
If you are in rental accommodation they usually have bolts to allow for padlocks.
If you are in a guesthouse then it is no different than any hotel at home.
On a more personal level.... 16 years in SE Asia and I have never had my apartment or house broken into or had stuff taken.
Petty theft when you are out an about can be an issue (snatch and run or pickpockets) in places where there are large numbers of tourists.

I've never had an issue with theft and agree with suphanburi that you're over-thinking this. You can certainly safeguard your passport in one of those small pouches that you wear underneath your clothing. But be smart and don't carry a lot of cash, and never flash a wad of money in front of others. |

That was comforting. Thank you for the responses--I can see how I should fret less. |

In Vietnam most common problems will be having your bag/phone/laptop snatched in a second from you here. Motobikes drive on sidewalks all the time and I have seen a few foreigners getting their camera or phone yanked right out of their hands on the street in HCMC. Pick-pockets also work in teams here and snatch whatever they can from foreigners. Police are basically useless and will often do nothing. You could turn your head for a second and have stuff stolen on the street here.
Hotels and guest houses tend to be safer, but use some common sense. Don't expect western standards unless you're paying western prices here. $10USD a night gets you ten bucks worth of flimsy locks and cheap doors with a doorman passed out asleep in a hammock...
And don't rent a "local" room here unless you really know what you are doing, a friend did that to save money, went out for a few hours and came to back to find his place was cleaned out... I rent an apartment with security cameras and door guards who actually care while he wanted to go "local" and save a few bucks. He sure got a taste of the local hospitality!
