I agree with Bud...
It won't be the slight inconvenience of internet censorship that drives me out of China. It will be inflation. This is especially true for FTs who need to send money home.
Now is the time for all teachers to bring this up, during their contract renewal negotiations. Wages need to increase for legitimate FTs. |

Wages are already quite high for foreign teachers compared to local teachers and other workers. Local salaries are very low. Local teachers often make approximately 2,000 to 3,000 RMB per month. So our salaries are not bad at all. The difference is that Chinese are good at saving but we as foreigners often waste money. The real issue is not salaries. We should live more frugally by shopping at local markets, eating common Chinese foods, avoiding taxis, and other lifestyle changes. |

I was curious if anyone knows how the business community feels about the increased Internet scrutiny? They use VPN by necessity and the feeling when I was in China was that they permitted VPN to appease business.
I ran my business for five years from China, and would have never been able to pull it off from what it sounds like now. Not to mention what would have happened to me without my daily dose of JAV. |

Great idea, why didn't I think of that. I will just adapt to a strict diet of rice and vegetables (maybe a couple of chicken feet once a week as a special treat) and avoid those super expensive taxis. Actually, thinking about it, I will offer to give back a perecentage of my salary. Cheers.
But, you do make one very fair point. The salaries for local teachers are far too low. |

Back to topic:
I guess, since my vpn has been working fine (apart from that 2 week period a while ago), it is a non-issue for me.
If I could not use a vpn, it would be inconvenient of course and even annoying. I do use it for work, Science vids, etc. Also, I keep in touch with most of my friends on FB, sometimes shop for prawns, etc.
But in saying that, surely not enough reason for FTs to leave China if they like it here? |

| I will probably stay, money is too easy to come by for how little work you need to do. I'd suck it up and use my vacation time wisely. That is the way you survive this place. Plus.. let's be quite honest here, the worst crap you have to deal with is retarded bosses/farmers with no manners. It isn't the end of the world, but it ain't that fun either. But again, where else in the world can you work so little and make so much? |

You're not alone talentedcrayon, I only lived in China for 18 months after working in another nearby country (famed for it's fast internet but with a little censorship of prawn ha,ha). It got to a point where Astrill's lack of reliability really drove me crazy (I know it annoyed some businesses in Shenzhen and Guangzhou where I worked, I got to meet a few Chinese and laowai businessmen/women in between teaching and they hated it).
I know we can live without facebook, youtube, etc. however it did annoy me that the firewall stopped me getting materials for teaching plus with keeping up with news from friends back home (along with popular culture, for example only 40 English/US movies make it to Chinese cinema whereas many other Asian nations seem to get a lot of American/British TV, movies, music, etc).
Along with the general challenges of living in China (which were much more of a struggle to me compared to Korea) plus stagnating wages via inflation it kind of made it easy for me to leave (plus I also moved to Zhangjiagang to teach at a training centre which to me was an incredibly boring place, it sounded interesting at first but in hindsight was a terrible move by me). The only benefit to me of being in China was the abundance of jobs (along with some people I met who I've remained friends with, mostly outside of work). I think Beijing and the CCP have to consider the consequences of not being in the real world (virtually). |

- Either I'm misinformed or those efforts you talk about have been incredibly miserable. I'm surprised how many are taking this situation seriously, not trying to offend you though.
For many reasons like the firewall being a hindrance to China itself sometimes, case and point in the recent presentation in which the firewall mastermind botched his presentation and had to use vpn (the report was here or on reddit).
A bigger point is, while I don't have a Ph.D in communication, that's not how technology works at all. With time, more deadly weapons are created, and ways to communicate become easier and in more different shapes.
In short, even in that hypothetical scenario -which none of us will live to see-, I'd still be fine after a few months of adjusting. |
