Yeah, I made the mistake of working for Hampson until I got so fed up with them that I quit. Now they send me an e-mail saying they may want to come after me for some money because I broke my contract. Are the blowing smoke or can they realistically do anything? I have a regular Z visa with a real school and Hampson was, aside from a joke, just something on the side.

ADVICE TO ALL: Don't work for these people. They take advantage of people from other countries who don't have any better options, and then sell them off to unsuspecting customers as being from New Zealand. That should have alerted me right there, but, alas, I was stupid.

Why do they want to pretend you are a Kiwi - how is that advantageous? Assuming you did not have a contract with them that stipulated breakage penalty, there is FA they can do. Having said that it was by your own admission dumb to go there in the first place - a quick check on DESL would have flagged it up as a no go

Kiwi? 'How is that advantageous?'
You have to ask? Cool

Yep, I blew it by not checking Dave's first and I did sign a contract. What I am curious about is how then can realistically come after me for money should they choose to.

There were people from every country in the world working there, but very few native speakers. Sri Lanka, Germany, Italy, Denmark, several of the 'Stans, Portugal, etc. Funny thing is that they were all from New Zealand.

You could advise them that you will tell the city FAO about all the non native speakers they are passing off as native.

See if that gets them off your back.

Any particular reason why they chose NZ? Random.

It's easier to pull the wool over fee-payers' eyes if the 'strange' English accents are said to be Kiwi. I've known Russians that are told to say to students they are Scottish. As with Kiwi accents, students rarely know what a Scottish accent ought to sound like.

I worked at Hampson and found them incredibly dishonest and cheap. Our place had a staff of 50 including teachers. We had one printer that could copy.

As a rule, the only people who work there are those who have misled or cant get work anywhere else.

I would say the pay is the lowest possible. They dont care about your schedule and show no interest in the teachers at all.

I would further say they did pay on time and were honest in that they told me they didnt care about the teachers.

To answer your question, no, there is nothing they can do.

Shanghai Noon,

Thanks for the info. I have been scratching my head over this and haven't come up with anything they can do.

As a happy ending for this story, I got another job about 3 blocks away that has regular classes on a schedule, all college students, and considerably more pay than Hampson.

I would say make sure they dont know where you are working... management could call them and trash you.

Dont worry about the SAs... they come and go like lunch.

One recent SAs who left trashed the staff to the clients the day she was leaving.

I too have been threatened by them when I quit.. hahaha. Also by the little training school that I worked at. They just do that when you get the better of them. "What? We were going to fix your schedule! You need to be more patient! You owe us for breaking contract!", uh huh.. sure I am going to pay you money, you ass-clowns. People quit when the terms are nfg or you can't block classes together.. they never seem to get that. It was a part-time job a long time ago but I skipped on them because of their inability to respect my time off. Pay day came and I quit that day.. then that quote from above came in and I couldn't stop laughing.

It's funny that I come across Hampson. Yesterday, I stopped in a quick-mart to have a beer on my day off. I was approached by some girl who works for said company. I just laughed and played along since I wasn't doing anything. She gave her sales spew and then we parted ways. What a pity she came up to me with that crap, otherwise I would've made her into a conquest. lol

Cheers,
Aaron
