In February, I signed a year long contract for a job where I'm just a white monkey. I was offered a better paying job actually teaching that starts in August.
I want to take it, but I don't know how transferable a Z1 is and I don't know what actions my current school could take. They seem friendly enough and I think they don't want a reputation for keeping unhappy teachers. |

Just quit, forfeit your letter of release, then see what happens.
Let us know if you are any happier at your new school playing the white monkey.
It's always a good idea to honor your commitments. |

To transfer your Z visa you need a release and recommendation letter from your current school. I doubt they will give that to you when you tell them that you want to break the contract. |

Ha, yeah. If I didn't know most of the teachers at the other school, I'd write it off as "grass is greener".
I've always honored all of my contracts, but in this case I was deceived into thinking I was a teacher. I did two demo lessons, have an American teaching credential, and moved from the Middle East. They shouldn't do that if they just want white monkeys. |

Check your passport - the z visa should have lapsed and you should have a 'residence permit' stamp , tied to work in your current city (and dependent on "your" FEC - a booklet which you might never have seen and which might be kept by the school).
There is no way to transfer the residence permit (AFAIK), but if your current school really is decent , then they might consider cancelling the residence permit and FEC, and giving you a release letter. On the other hand they might just demand any release penalty from you (check your contract).
Once you get hired by the next school , it seems you have to begin again the FEC and residence permit application, even if the school is in the same city .
If you leave without properly cancelling the FEC and residence permit , and without getting a release letter , then the next school won't be able to process your application.
of course , there are exceptions to every rule here. |

Generally I go along with those who counsel 'honour your commitments'. Also it's the residence permit that needs to be transferred.
I quit my first job after one semester and it was really the new school that muscled the old school to let me go.
A vocational v a nationally ranked school. God knows the power struggles that entailed .
I gave up all of my airfare refund, but it was worth it.
You won't know what your current school will say until you ask and the fact that you have another school to go to will give you confidence.
As a qualified teacher you can expect better but I won't go into the thought process that suggested China would be a positive move after the ME.
Most of the FT-types like me accept the dancing monkey role and try to make a difference to the students who want to learn.
