I've decided to move jobs next September but am unclear of the procedure.

My current RP expires late September, my FEC expires July the 2nd.

I've already found a suitable job starring in September. The new job's FAO is not too clear. She told me I just need to have a health check in China and come to the university early September.

Is this right? I don't need to go anything else?

Thanks.

As long as the new school doesn't require a criminal background check, the health check and the release from your present FAO are all you should need. Then again, your city or province may make other demands.

Ask the new FAO if the new school will arrange for the health check and pay for it. If nothing else, the new school should be willing to arrange for it.

The health check is standard operating procedure.

Thanks. They only mentioned the health check and letter of release. If I give them those things, is it just a matter of waiting until I arrive in September? I'm going back to the states in mid-July. My current employer says they won't cancel my RP - valid until almost October. My FEC expires mid-July. So I'll be able to re-enter China, then when I arrive in my new job I get a new FEC and RP?

On a related note, what's stopping the university from hiring someone else? Or me turning up in September with no job? At least applying from home the uni has to apply for the invitation letter and work permit.

If you go to your home country at the end of the term and work for another employer, you will probably have to reapply for a Z visa from home. That would be the simplest thing for you to do. Just be sure that the new school applies for the letter of invitation in a timely manner so you can get your visa.

I advise that you get clarification regarding the health check. Will you need a stateside check, or will your new employer let you return and stay contingent upon your passing the Chinese health check? The home health check requirement (like the criminal background check requirement) is spotty.

If the new school offers to issue a residence permit for the following semester I wonder if you would have to go through the rigamarole of reapplying for a visa. I'm not sure if the old employer will allow your residence permit to remain valid until you return at the beginning of the following September.

In the meantime Communicate with both parties to find out what they can do to help you and to find out how to proceed. FAO's have a bad habit of oversimplifying their answers. Most of the FAO's at the schools where I taught had little idea of what I had to do to even arrive in China.

I am sure that there are others who have negotiated a scenario like yours. You may get someone else's first hand anecdote.

Yeah, I would go back home but want to stay on my current RP as it's still valid for another 3 weeks after I arrive in China. The new employer says that's OK, I should do a health check in China, go home for the summer and then return early September and the uni will sort things like the RP and FEC.
