Did it even occur to you that the OP and his wife don't need to arrive in KSA glued at the hip? So what if they have different starting dates; they'll figure it out just like other working couples do. No biggie if they arrive on different days. Besides, assuming they'd both be direct hires at their respective universities, they'll have more flexibility than teachers working for restricitve contracting companies.

That's pretty much how I would have replied! We aren't expecting everything to be perfectly synchronised, and I don't think it's unrealistic for a married couple to look for two jobs in the same area. |

Well, in fact, you will find that the percentage of teaching married couples who have separate direct-hire contracts (living in the same area) to be practically 0%....yes...that's 0%..... in the Kingdom. In fact, I've never heard of such a case.
The only exception to this is married couples teaching in primary or secondary international schools HIRED AS A TEACHING COUPLE. (In fact, they rarely hire a single person, period, for reasons too obvious to mention).
My point is, you're wasting your time thinking you can do this. And I further feel you're being encouraged to continue to think this way. All for nothing. Pure pie-in-the-sky....smoke and mirrors.
The fact is, most (female) spouses who are working in KSA are hired sort of "under the table", so to speak. They'll have a sort of "working contract" which is more like a Letter of Understanding, and that's about it. I predict your wife will eventually fall into that category or a similar one.
Don't forget, in the Kingdom, nothing is possible....which in reality means anything is possible.
Please do come back to us in about 6 months after your arrival in KSA and relate how things worked out for you. I'll bet they'll have worked out TOTALLY DIFFERENTLY from what you thought might happen and from the unrealistic, feel-good advice you've been getting on this thread.

| If you are in Dhahran, PMU could be a good option for your wife. It is south of Khobar. |

I (mostly) agree with Hash.
I have been in KSA for quite a few years. I have met a lot of teachers. In that time I have met only two teaching couples who were legally employed/sponsored by different institutions. I did, however, hear a lot about the administrative hassles they faced as a result of being a couple/family with split sponsorship.
It is not unrealistic to look. It can be done. But is it worth the hassle? In my (ever so humble) opinion, no. But your mileage may vary.
Try all avenues but don't feel you have to tie yourself to one now. Your wife could work under the table, like most trailing spouses. She could find a legit job, leave the country and re-enter under company sponsorship. She might get an iqama transfer. It is Saudi - there is no one way to do things, the rules change daily, and not many people follow the rules anyway. |

I couldn't have said it better myself. Please do return, Mr Penguin, in about 6 months and let us know what finally really did happen to you and yours. |
