I'd still rather just get on the plane in point A and arrive in my destination without any break in the middle.
Which is why it's more expensive.
Take a steamer, and sock it to the man.

Layovers are common at hubs ie Dubai for Emirates, HK for Cathay and Dragon.
There will be a minimum number of hours - 2 to 3 in my exp which is simply the technical requirements of bag transfer and getting passengers from one gate to another.
Where there are longer layovers it generally means someone is really looking for the El Cheapo option.
But hey! didn't we get into ESL for the cultural experience?
Since when did a 9 hour wait in Ulan Batoor not be an interesting possibility?
This 'frafffully tedious' stuff from some posters is hard to swallow.

Can anyone else on the ground verify these lower salaries are becoming more widespread. I appreciate the activity on my question, but this airport talk is a bit off topic and not really helpful to my original question.

Fringe items like airfares and paid accommodation are worth upward of 3 months salary.
OP would be in serious error if concentrating on per month cash remuneration to the exclusion of the two main fringe items as above.
But back to remuneration: Since 2004 when I first got involved in the business, salaries have definitely increased.
BUT in the short term ie 2-4 years they have gone backward or plateaued.
As others have mentioned accom and travel allowances have been chiseled.
I started off on full air refund which was over 10K. I'll look at my first school and see what they're offering now and report that. The salary was 5500pm in 2004.

I remember working at a uni and a girl from North Carolina requiring a flight that was 14500 RMB return. No problems, got the cash in hand.

I remember that same uni paying for ALL bills on my apartment, internet, heating, electricity, gas, water etc.

Now I see some offering 5000 RMB airfare.

I also think wages have kinda stagnated [although high skilled PT jobs i.e. IELTS tutoring, A level tutoring etc.] may have gone up. Along with wages being same same it seems more and more jobs want your white face in the office.

My first school as of today cites FT salaries as '5-10000pm'.
So, that doesn't put us any further ahead Crying or Very sad
How long ago Larson was the N Carolina girl refund?
That's pretty impressive (14500)

Possibly 4 1/2 years ago.

I was told since I was UK my limit was 10000. So I found a direct flight for 9980 with BA. Felt good getting that PG tips on the way back.

The odd thing is that, as nice as the guy who lead the foreign teachers was, I.e. I only saw him to pick up my salary and schedule, he and his co workers would absolutely rinse the system.

They'd go to Malaysia to recruit foreign teachers and come back with huge backs from the Crowne Plaza in KL and with bags and bags of shopping.

I got pissed they had a trip for the students to London and I maybe half of those going were my students [as English majors]. They wanted me to go so I said why not. Turns out the trip didn't have 'space' for a foreigner. Turns out 14 'admin' staff went to accompany 29 students. All on the universities dime. Half of them were uncles or wives of those working in the accounting department. Go figure.

Workers Paradise mate.
You would think having a live Brit along would have opened up all sorts of possibilities for the students. Making connections between what they saw in London and how it differed (or resembled) their expectations.
Maybe visit a private home?
Do any of these schools actually value education?

I just checked Qatar airways, the 700 pound flight that I found had this bad boy in the middle:

Yep, half a day in an airport. that means I'm going to go and check into a hotel...in Qatar, one of the most expensive places on earth. With eating 2 or 3 meals there plus taxis that's probably another say....150 USD on top of the flight just to entertain myself.

I'm certainly not going to sit in an airport departure gate for almost 12 hours.

Relly? Because I tried the same search and found 795 with 1.3 and 1.25 hour layovers out / in. I have flown this route for 10 years - never paid more than 700, never had the layovers of the length you seem so adept at finding - 8 hours was the most 3 to 4 the average, i don't mind layovers and saving at the rate of 100 pounds an hour seems absolutely reasonable to me. Of course everyone would fly direct if possible, but economics cannot be ignored. As i said before, what would you do if it was your money?

I have had higher salary each year for ten years (cept 2008) thru negotiation and moving to other employers. Based on the anecdotal evidence of scanning job sites regularly I believe the overall trend is upwards. Some universities in the sticks still offer 5000, but noone in their right mind should accept this, plenty of unis offer 9+

I don't know if salaries are going down or not but this ad is rather upfront about the racism

Looks like a real winner! Terrible salary for a Beijing training center and seems one will be paying for their own accommodation out of pocket. Wouldn't be surprised if the teacher was asked to travel center-to-center. Doesn't look like they will be making any attempt to get a proper visa. Will likely be deducting all applicable taxes as if they were on the right visa.

Getting back to the thread, one reason I think salaries have stagnated has been the large increase that the employer must also pay for obtaining a visa for the teacher, along with the 35% social tax contribution.

But listings like this seem to show that more is going on. If they are not going to be paying for the overhead, one would think they could offer a respectable salary to lure a marketable white face.

The free Mandarin lessons may balance it all out however...
