(I accidentally put this in the off-topic forum, now moving it here)
Does anybody know much about this place? I am looking at some options there (to be a little cryptic). I have corresponded with one forum member who has a little knowledge. Anybody else have any direct or indirect knowledge?
I know that CUHK SZ campus is pretty new, set up just two years ago. They have about five foreign teachers there, in the humanities school.
What kind of salaries do they offer for lecturer positions?
What is the management setup like? Is it humane - or is it Confucian. Wink
Any idea of student numbers and the general satisfaction of staff?
What about the campus? It's in Longgang, about 25 km out from Lowu border crossing. I'm assuming it's a pretty quiet life out there. But I note the subway isn't too far away, so getting into town an the weekends shouldn't be a problem. Is it a nice enough campus?
I'm assume they provide housing, or an allowance? If the latter, how much do they provide?

| It might be a decent uni to get a foothold in China, but Longgang looks like it's in the middle of nowhere. Probably better to work at the real CUHK. |

Longgang is in the middle of nowhere.
I know a little about the place - the job's teaching academic writing, at least the one I was interested in was to teach academic writing. Pay's not great, conditions aren't great, location isn't great. Those are my personal views though.
The real CUHK is much more competitive to work at, competition will be a lot fiercer. |

Not quite. I've been through Longgang many times, and I can say that it's hardly "the middle of nowhere." It's one of the newer and outermost districts of the city, but it's not devoid of humanity or places to go. If you ever pass through there or look at a map you'll see it's largely residential, with amenities like Tesco, Wal-mart, Starbucks, shopping plazas, a golf course, a couple of parks, etc and a subway connection (Universiade) to everywhere else in the city. I've never been to CUHK, but I'd say it's in a decent location, away from the chaos of the centre, but close enough to get there anytime you want. To add a little perspective with respect to subway distances - Shenzhen University-Luo Hu crossing 35-40 mins, Shekou-Luo Hu crossing 55-60 mins, Airport-Luo Hu crossing 68 mins, Universiade-Luo Hu crossing 45-50 mins, Universiade- 深圳北站 (hi-speed rail) 45-50 mins. SZ has excellent public transportation and being further out shouldn't pose a problem for most people. |

| By first world standards, those kinds of distances from the city center aren't bad. But in China, an hour by metro to get anywhere is far. I'm not saying you won't be ok that far out, but it might get old. And based on the other info mentioned about pay and conditions, it sounds even less appealing. |

Well, as far as I have been able to find out, pay is likely to be 20 000-25 000. Unless I am mistaken, this is hardly a poor salary in the ESL industry in China.
Yes, one could work on the HK side. But then you'd be earning 40 000 a month and paying 20 000 a month for a decent apartment, maybe 1000-2000 a month for transport fees, and then exorbitant utility fees... In Longang you'd be paying 3000 for the apartment, zip for transport. You do the math.
I lived in Panyu for eight months not that long ago, about one hour out of Guangzhou. Not even any taxis, let alone Starbucks or pizza huts. I think I can handle Longagng.

BTW, the school is still waiting for the selection committee in HK to make a decision. These people don't do fast. |

| Yes, 25k seems ok, but do consider the entire package (e.g., teaching load, paid time off, curriculum development, marking load, relo, visa support, flights, etc.). Not sure what 3000 per month for a flat would get you even out there, but probably not much more than a very basic two-bedroom. Anyhow, if you end up working there, or get anymore info, please share. |

I have friends teaching out there who are pretty happy. Of course no job is perfect. Housing is much cheaper out there and they are paying about 3,000 for rent. Here in Nanshan it would be double that.

| Shenzhen is arguably the area to be in China, but right now Longgang is one of the less desirable areas of Shenzhen, and rents reflect that. Are there any decent unis in Nanshan? |
