The fact that courts will always find against foreigners in a simple domestic case or a huge multi billion dollar contract dispute.

The fact if you become 'too big' at something you will find trouble [i.e. open a bar, it's too popular, cadre's brother in law wants to open bar, suddenly you are shut down for some reason].

Taiwanese and Hong Kong "compatriots" have also been on the receiving end. From time to time, overseas Chinese language newspapers report local partners, with the help of local courts, taking over successful TW and HK businesses. Usually the local partners wait until the business became a profitable going concern before making their moves.

I would say they are living comfortably, but they still have several things 'hanging over them'. The need to secure a visa every single year.

In 2008 when Beijing hosted the Olympics, there was a serious visa crack down on foreigners teaching English in China. Many, including some who have been in country for years, were forced to leave. Large numbers of them ended up in Japan and Korea, depressing the going rates in those places.

And I would concur with the other points you raised.

Undoubtedly, mainland society's attitude toward skin colour is both overt and nuanced and multi-faceted. Its effect on the ESL scene is but a specific aspect of this complex issue. Any ABC or CBC contemplating entering the ESL scene in China would have to come to grips with this reality.

While some foreigners have indeed established a presence, I'm not one of them, just passing time due to having a bit of coin saved and a girlfriend of 9 years that has a Phat Paycheck.

Surely that in itself is an accomplishment ! Very Happy

My uni, in Britain changed the program (engineering) and while they were getting up to snuff.... projects due for the 1st and 2nd year had to be checked/changed/monitored and since the local FAO, wanted to hire teachers from his authority to maintain control (in other words engineer passing grades, a problem I reckon I contributed to by failing half the class the last term I was actually in class....and did not estimate the magnitude of the task he had demanded to be in charge of, it left the mission a tad short of achieving it goal so I was kept on in a temp position, really something I didn't want to do but the lure of coins jangling and the fact that I had worked for them for around 10 years, but take into acct. this was not an English class and I was working as a consultant mostly to their projects....anyway .. I am through now...getting all spruced up with some dental work ... raring to go and split the lanes of the future and see what is left for this ole' Alabama redneck scooter bum....good luck cuz.... don't let those who are not even gracing the mainland with their footprints sour your calling to the PRC, my first question to anyone who offers advice is Where are you currently located....the 2nd would be when were you last in china and were you employed and where exactly..... 3rd, would be to seek any source of bitterness by asking if the person giving advice if they had any reasons to be dealing out trump cards of misery such as former wives, business partners and so forth ...

Anyone considering doing business in China, no matter what the nature of the business, would do well to read Mr. China by Tim Clissold. (Not available in China. LOL)

Went to the Amazon reviews of the book.

One obvious wu mao stating his 'MBA class Mainland Chinese partners...' and 'China is ready to run the world'. Ah, they give away the clues too easily.
