Has anyone carried an acoustic guitar from Japan to Canada (Toronto) on an Air Canada flight, could you tell me how much extra it costs?

I took a bass guitar home to San Francisco. I ordered a hard case from LAOX in Tokyo, and told them to give me the box they shipped it in. I put my bass inside the hard case, and my hard case inside its box, packed it with miscellaneous things, and taped it up. I flew JAL, and they insisted that I claim it as excess baggage. I believe it cost about 20,000, but I'm not sure about that. Anyway, that was because my bass was oversized. You might be able to get away with claiming your guitar as luggage, and even have them bring it inside the cabin. Call the airline for details, or check out their luggage policies on their website (or both is best). Don't forget to detune your strings before you fly! Very Happy

Try calling Air Canada toll free in Japan at 0120 048 048.

I took a guitar as a hand carry and the stewardess put it in a special spot. Phone ahead and you should be able to take it with you for free.

Really? I was just flying from Toronto back to Vancouver via AC and they had me pay $25 + tax CAD for my guitar (with hard case) as an extra luggage. I'm going to bring it over to Japan with me but this time I'm flying JAL. I guess call the airline is the best solution. Confused
