A roof over your head means you won't be living on a park bench and have a place for a shower etc. |
At the risk of stating the bleeding obvious, living on a park bench in China OR Viet would not be possible for reasons stated in the past, the police for one. It can be done in Hong Kong however...and many parks/sportsgrounds have hot showers, as do the public swimming pools. |

It's very possible to rent a cheap hotel room for $10-12USD per day. And food? Go local and learn some lingo. You can eat 3 meals per day for under $6 USD.
Total daily costs can be kept under $20 bucks. If you don't live like a tourist.
And get the hell out of D-1 HCMC, what a dump. Tourist trap to the max. |

I seem to remember seeing somewhere (I think it was on a Ninja Teacher YouTube video) that there's an area in HCMC with little studios and small apartments that you can just show up and rent for 200-300 a month. Maybe I'm wrong...anyone have any ideas? Seems like a good way to get started after arriving. |

Yes its true, go to 18A Nguyen Thi Minh Khai and walk around the alley, you will see lots of signs for rooms for rent, check out a couple.. some nice ones in that price range. |

I dunno if "nice" is the word I would use for that alley. But yeah, cheap places to live and lots of little shops. There's a pretty good outdoor BBQ place with cheap dark beer that's actually decent nearby if I recall. |

Hate this bloody quote thing. No deposit or minimum term needed? |

I think just one month in advance. Most of the places are owned independently so negotiate with the owner. I usually offered 3 months upfront for a discount but you can do month by month if you prefer. |

Thanks cb, that clears up a lot. Are the flats furnished with bed and hot water and internet? |

yes they are big rooms really, but mostly furnish with AC, Internet and beds. Most of them will have cleaning and laundry services available. It a good safe bet to get started until you are planted in HCMC. |
