I have known on arrival reimbursement, so the angry reaction is a bit absurd.
As you rightly observe, you have a lot of skin in the game at this stage.
Even the most co operative and warm FAOs have very little idea of the logistics of getting to China let alone the upfront costs.
Also little understanding of economics of air travel ie book late pay more.
On my first gig (2004) I literally had to force myself through those last hoops and I had contact with a person who had returned from the school I was going to!
Get an assurance that they will meet you at airport. The last thing you need after 20+ hours travel, is to be at the mercies of a Chinese taxi driver.
