So while many countries like Thailand and Mexico are tempting, they can be a trap where many an expat get stuck.

Only if they are also stuck at the bottom end of the EFL ladder.

It doesn't take much to move up.

A 1-year (weekends or on-line) teacher certification program gets you from $1k entry level jobs to $2k.

Getting an actual teacher's license or master's moves you up into the $3k range and that goes a long way in Thailand.

With pressure on the labor market right now it isn't that hard to find jobs at 50k baht ($1500) as long as you have a degree, a pulse, clear police check and are under 60. It goes a long way when a nice townhouse in the burbs rents out for $200.

I wouldn't say 50k baht goes a long way in Thailand at all. 100k, yes...but not 50k.

It's livable on, nothing more.

Not sure what burbs you're talking about, but no nice townhouse in the burbs of BKK is going for $200. And you probably won't come close to making 50k Baht anywheres else in TH unless you have a teaching license and work the K-12 scene. TEFLtastic jobs are few and far between in TH.

But again - 50k does not go a long way in Thailand. It just means you aren't living totally on the breadline like a 30k teacher is.

The point is that 50k is not much at all for an expat since they must live in two worlds: the cheap one (TH) and the expensive one, which is usually anywhere in the western world. 100k Baht is therefore the minimum one should consider for Thailand. Can't get that much? Well, up your quals or go elsewhere. Or just accept the fact that you won't save any money, and in fact may have to use savings to cover miscellaneous expenses and travel.
