Would much rather live in a 'corrupt third world country' than the UK. The government official in the 'corrupt' country might want a $10 bribe before doing his job. In the UK he'll just charge you $50, give a receipt an it'll be perfectly legal. Personally, I'd rather pay $10.

Corruption isn’t just about paying the odd bribe. It makes life dangerous and cheap. The police in countries like Thailand are worse than useless, which I find scary. Bus drivers have been given licenses when they shouldn’t and end up wiping out dozens of passengers and pedestrians before fleeing upcountry. Call the police? See above. So that new office building has serious faults? How can this be when the building inspectors signed it off? Welcome to paradise, folks.

Not being facetious, but a large part of joe30’s dissatisfaction with the UK is due to him being unable to find a girlfriend here.

Dear scot:

I don't think the thread's been hijacked. It has rather evolved into a typical Dave's soap opera for your amusement while undergoing dialysis. Surely you can't wait for the next installment of joe's girlfriendless angst, Hod's attempts to keep joe real, and the occasional interjection from Italy and other points unknown:-)

Now, back to the drama!

Best,
spiral

So reading Dave's is a substitute for Soap Opera ! Ah. Now I understand.

Could joe solve his problem of not having a girlfriend by online dating ?

I missed this gem, but it's reassuring to know the UK isn't a complete dump.

He'll be fine in Hong Kong whining and dining the ladies at Delaney's Irish Pub. They all love the Beef and Guinness pie at $184 (£18 ) or fish and chips at 15 quid. I can see Hong Kong getting pelters after a year or two.

I had a nice reply all worked out for the gang, then I thought why. We have nothing to offer. No advice. No experience. We are here for you Scot and good luck.

There's a pretty sad tale on the China off-topic forum about this topic at the moment....

Well yes, you don't need to be Sigmund Freud to see that the root of his disenchantment with the UK lies with his inability to get his leg over. Quite why he thinks women in Hong Kong will be throwing themselves at him I don't know.

You're also bang on the money about the corruption issue as well - perhaps when joe30 has lived in a developing country (HK?!?) for a few years he will see how corruption permeates every aspect of life, and how utterly depressing and frustrating it gets after a while.

I've met expats with that mentality before; they think it's great that you can bung a cop a few dollars to get away with some minor misdemeanor, yet the moment they get ripped off by a local or the authorities hit them for a bribe, they're quick to whinge about how corrupt and third world it all is.
